POSITION ON POPULATJdfeLCONTROL At a special meeting of the Westlake Jr. High School P.TA.,-helWednesday, May 19, 1971 in the Westlake Jr. High School auditorium, members by a vote of 68 to 1 passed a resolution opposing the National Parents and Teachers Association position on population control and planned parenthood. The resolution, to be forwarded to Utah State P.TA. officials, proposed that the Utah State P.TA. goes on record, takes a stand against family planning, planned parenthood and the hidden implications attendant in this type of legislation: that State P.TA. takes a d leadership role throughout the state and nation in combating and . in bringing P.TA. policies back into line with P.TA. objectives. We, the West Lake Jr. High School Parent, Teacher and Students Association, find the Objectives of P.T A. in direct conflict with Tamily Hanning legislation supported by the National P.TA. and by some members of our Congress and wholeheartedly oppose State and National support of these two items under No. 4, Human Child Welfare n Control, and No. 7, Family Planning and Population Control, the resolution Ecology-Populatio- states. (The resolution is printed in its entirety on Page 5 this paper. Featured speaker at the meeting was Dr. John E. Any local P.TA. association is entitled to take issue with the policies and bring it to convention and we would discuss it. If the majority approves the resolution, we would certainly send it along to the National Association. Its a democratic organization and we determine the decisions that Utah makes in our position here. The National association cannot legislate for us. In response to a question as to whether the Utah State P.TA. had gone on record opposing the National resolution Mrs. Bjorklund said, "This was brought before one of the conventions and not a word was said ed intended to approve or dis- approve the issue. She indicated the article had upset many people, but if we can make people become involved and identify and solve problems, this is the purpose of parents and teachers Joseph McCarthy Memorial Fund. Their goal is to spread the ideas and ideals of the late Senator Joseph McCarthy. The Memorial Fund has sponsored three events on campus.
