Satan works in many ways. Every country that has fallen from the beginning of time lias been because the government has gotten bigger than the people. They have let wealth and greed take over. And we are no The Painful Truth exception! J. Reese Hunter Out of this Primary Election in Utah, one thing ought to be painfully clear to all conservatives: it is practically impossible for conservative candidates to get through both the nominating conventions and the Primary Election in either the Democrat or Republican party. If the party liberals dont have enough power to beat the conservative in the convention, the apathy of the people will be sure to do it in the Primary election. With one or two exceptions, this was the case in the present Primary Election. Conservatives have better chances of surviving the party conventions than Primary elections. Even though the Partv hierarchy in both parties is solidly liberal, the rank and file member is generally conservative. These rank and filers can work their way into delegate spots. There is no apathy with them so you will be sure to find them assuming their delegate C come time. convention Thus, our responsibilities conservative candidates made creditable showings at the conventions. No matter how hard the campaign is conducted in the Primary, if only 20 to 25 percent of the voters show up at the polls, as is the case, chances are a majority of them will be candidate. The supporters of the Liberal-socialis- t clique within both parties, making up the leadership, will use the prestige and power of its leadership position to combine against any conservative candidate mining. Their new ally, the students within the 'rticipation 70 program originating on the campus of our oriented university, will give them added This pits the Conservative and the apathetic silent t majority against the leadership and its small group of active supporters. That relatively small group of supporters, however, with all of them working and voting, is larger than the supporters the Conservative can muster. The candidate has his support from people who are active and who will lend their open support. They know what is at stake. The Conservative candidate, on the other hand, draws the bulk of his support from the of the party, the "silent majority. And, during a Primary election the majority lives up to their name-th- ey s remain silent. They are content to let the choose for them the candidates thev mav vote on in the General Election. The only thing the wants of the conservative within the party, is to have his support, financial and otherwise, at General Election time. Thus, you have conservatives supporting tin party's candidate in both parties even though he doesnt support what the individual candidate stands for. Perhaps the members of the American Independent Party have the right idea after all. They saw this dilemma a long time ago and decided to do something about it. They want to get to where the action is the General Election. They realized this is nearly impossible within the structures of the Democrat and Repbulican parties so they did the next logical thing by starting their own partv.
