They do not object to a modicum of control locally so long as they can control, through economic pressures, the ultimate destiny of education. As we get further "hooked" on "federal-ai- d to education: we logically will place ourselves in a weaker position to withstand greater and ever greater economic pressures from above. The control of the education of our children is being bought and paid for with our own tax dollars. The 38th Legislature of Utah, in General Session, had bills introduced which would have created larger school districts through consolidation. These bills have been introduced before and are increasing in number. We can expect further moves to create larger districts through consolidation. The argument will be that there will be a tax savings through so doing. However, bigger government agencies do not create less expensso-calle- black community leaders are working out programs students they feel will be compatible. He explained that the Board presently has before it a document comwith 17 demands from the Spanish-America- n munity. It seems to us that the parents of children in that area ought to do some serious thinking. They should come up with some questions, such as, How much federal funds are coming into the Salt Lake City School District? Is Dr. Wiscombe personally on the federal payroll as well as the local payroll? If so, how much is he receiving and what services is he rendering to receive it? What are the guidelines which the district must abide by in order to receive federal money? Has Dr. Wiscombe been instructed to bus children to other areas ostensibly for the purpose of tax savings but actually for the purpose of creating a "racial balance" in accordance with the desires of the federal Department of Health, Educatiqp and Welfare? These and other questions ought to be answered, and soon. If satisfactory answers are not received then it would seem that the people of Salt Lake City owe it to themselves to hire a new School Superintendent The control of the education of their children hangs in the balance. 2. ... 3-pa- ge Hard Sell Ad We shouldn't need j . a Utah Independent newspaper - - not really - - at least one would not til ink so, but we do, and it is very refreshing to have it It is frustrating to wonder how long we will have it For one, I intend to support the paper with money and whatever else I have available, especially by talking to as many as possible to get them involved as I am im-volve- We will no doubt see d. op- I have position, presently. heard that other "conservative " papers have been squeezed out of the picture in our village. I thought the best thing I could do to support was to take a small ad. I am not very rich, so I didn't dare to take a big ad, but I wanted to do all I felt I could. I was disappointed though, I had written a soft sell ad, but someone edited the thing to a hard selL Really, I am most interested in telling people that I am anxious to trade with people who support the paper, and I am; but I did insert that I was engaged in printing. This will create the need for busing youngsters to schools not locally situated. Dr. Arthur C. Wiscombe, superintendent of the Salt Lake City Schools said the plan to close six elementary schools will "enable us to upgrade classroom experiences." He noted that there are elementary schools in the central part of the city now with more than 50 of the enrollment brown or black. This will increase, and, if steps are not taken, will eventually become 100 colored. To resolve this, brown and A Page 3 Symbol Earl Zarbin Mr. Zarbin if a newspaperman in Arizona. I decided to wear a peace symbol. No, not THAT peace symbol, the one used by some folks as an em- blem of their protest against war in South Vietnam. Ive always held that anyone who favors war over peace isnt all here, so wearing a symbol to pro- test the Vietnamese war or any war is like nothing. Who needs it? Still, seeing these people walk around with their inverted trident badges nagged me. Were all for peace, I said to myself, except most of us dont feel the need to constantly remind everyone who sees us. Finally, I concluded that THAT peace symbol didnt really stand for peace, anyway. The inverted trident is the combined semaphore symbol for the letters ND, which stands for nuclear disarmament, and was first used in the mid- 1950s by ban the bomb marchers in London, England. My peace symbol was to be much older. It had its origin some-where back in antiquity, when men got the idea that their bodies and their minds belonged to themselves and not to some slave master. The concept was refined and developed tainty, but until that utopia ar rjves the peaceful and productive cjtizens, those who would' rely on themselves and on the voluntary and willing cooperation of their neighbors, must organize a police force which they name govern- ment This police force is not designed to restrict or to restrain any person engaged in peaceful endeavors.
