Federal Power Over Children? by John F. McManus Belmont, Massachusetts If we had a dime for every American farmer who wishes that the federal government had never stuck its nose into the field of agriculture, we could probably retire. The control exercised by an army of federal agents so dominates farming today that a man has to seek permission from the government to plant on his own land. In like manner, the federal government controls the trucking industry, even to the extent of setting rates, establishing routes, and selecting the carriers that may serve the public in a given area. Similar complaints can be heard and should be listened to from officials who run the airlines, the railroads, the petroleum companies, and other industries. Another manifestation of too much government is that, as more and more Americans now realize, the federal presence in education, welfare, housing, medicine, etc., has resulted in skyrocketing costs, fantastic increases in government power, and a worsening situation everywhere. The Children Are Next area where government has no business, and where its presence carries frightening overtones. Molding Children Earmarking $1.85 billion as a starter, the Child and Family Services Act calls for the establishment of before- - and proe centers for grams for older children, of for care the toddlers, programs newly bom infants, and a host of other services. The measure would authorize federal personnel to identify, diagnose, and treat physical, mental, psychological, and emotional barriers to full e proparticipation by children in If that doesnt grant government the grams. power to mold children according to federal designs, what does it do? Backers of the act insist that compliance will be on a voluntary basis. But Representative Brademas has stated that the Act is aimed at groups, serving children in all and that it. must, to the extent possible, involve all children. Critics fear, with ample justification, that this Act, if passed, will soon be as voluntary as forced busing and other government-create- d nightmares. Some support for the proposal has developed after-scho- child-servic- socio-econom- r It would be comforting to regard the length- ening string of federal boondoggles as simply failures. But the possibility that each new federal program was designed to increase the power of government should not be overlooked. How often has anyone seen a federal agency disbanded? Has a government agency ever been created that did not make matters worse? in government, Right now, the breast-beater- s with their vaunted passion for helping the disadvantaged, have aimed their control mechanisms at our nations children. Rep. John Brad-ema- s .) and Sen. Walter Mondale have sponsored the Child and Family Services Act, currently before Congress for consideration. The Act is a blatant attempt to insert the federal governments nose into the province of raising children. One CIA document puts the number at more than 250,000. The killings by North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops match any of the massacres highly played-u- p committed by Hitler during World War II. In one instance, more than 400 helpless orphans and at least five nuns in charge of the children were put to death by gun fire or beheaded. -- Paul Scott er 1975 SILVER M0NARK The John Birch Society Features People Come To Aid and Glen Wheaton was the owner of the Pittsfield (Maine) Bijou Theater, the theater. towns only This spring he shut down his financially strapped movie house rather than show films. Now, as it inevitably does, the slimy hand of oil appears. We learn from the foreign press and from the Oil and Gas Journal of Tulsa, Okla., that there are gigantic oil structures in the Sea of Timor, in the Arafura Sea, in the Banda Sea and in the Sea of Flowers which surround Timor. We also learn from the same publications that the Rockefeller interests, directly or by proxy, control Indonesias oil but had no luck in their attempts to get the Portuguese government to let them take control of the oil wealth in and around Timor. The massacre is being perpetrated by the forces of General Suharto, the strong man of Indonesia, who also just happens to be allied with the Central Intelligence Agency. So, our government is involved in this genocide. Our big news medias silence on the sinister developments in Indonesia is deafening. But a close study of existing surveys shows that the vast majority of working mothers do not use day-car- e centers even when they are available free of charge. If real concern for working mothers is the motivation, then fewer government programs, resulting in lower taxes and less inflation, would certainly help. Americans must face the sobering realization that the programs envisioned by this Act were tried in Nazi Germany, and are being implemented today in Red China. There is no place for this type of legislation in the United States, unless we are willing to accept total government power over everyone and everything. n.)
