Show The Paper That Dares To Take A Stand November 20, parly in power, would object to the source of the loan, viewing it as a threat to his 1 975 The Utah Independent Page 5 Hammer and Nixon Israel and American Jewry. The major New York City banks find it perfectly plausible to guarantee a S2.4 billion loan to Israel by guaranteeing U.S. bonds. . .but not at all feasible to guarantee a S3 billion loan to New York City by guaranteeing municipal bonds. Of course, New York City Arab Dollars for New York City By Robert M. Bartell WASHINGTON, D.C. (Liberty Lobby News Servicc)-Wh- en President Ford said recently that the only way the Administration would go along with a federal bailout for New York City would be for the Congress to change the bankruptcy laws, it sounded suspiciously like a smoke screen. If the Administration totally opposes granting the beleaguered city federal assistance, it is certain Ford would veto any bill aimed at using taxpayers dollars. Now we. find that Mayor Abraham Beame of Fundless City rejected a $3 billion loan from an Arab country. . .bringing up some cant crank up the printing presses and run off whatever .money they need, and Washington can, but it does seem strange that we continue to pump taxpayer dollars into Israel when they face economic disaster on a scale surpassing that of New York City. Israel is plagued by a monumental inflation rate, the highest taxes in the deworld and a many-time- s valued currency. Of course we know what will happen: Israel will get her $2.4 billion, and New York City will get at least $4 billion and probably more, and then, while Egypt, Syria, Jordan and the rest of the Mideast combatants line up at one end of the pay table, the mayors of all the broke U.S. cities will belly up to the other end After all you cant expect Florida, California or Maine taxpayers to save New York unless theres a slice of the federal pie for them, so you can be sure the legislators who draft the Save New York plan will design it to give President Ford a graceful way to approve, and interesting questions. Its no secret that more Jews live in New York City than in Israel itself. Had Mayor Beame accepted the $3 billion loan from whichever unidentified Arab country made the offer, he undoubtedly would have incurred the enmity of a major part of his constituency. Although this reason for the turndown has been mentioned, the official line is that New York City banks refused to guarantee the loan. Now thats most interesting. The city, and Governor Carey, on behalf of the state, say that without U.S. intervention, New York faces disaster. Yet they continue to plead for taxpayers help, knowing the banks in their own city refuse to back them up in a loan from outside pri- to salve the wounds of the bleeding taxpayers by promising them some of their own dough back in case they spend more than they can collect in taxes. This being near election time, youll hear a lot of political commercials about fiscal sanity. Most of them will sound very familiar. Reader's comments are vate sources. Mayor Beame wel- come. McManus On October 1, a Belmont, Massachusetts man named Armand Hammer pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of making illegal contributions to former President Richard Nixons 1972 reelection campaign. Dr. Hammer, board chairman and president of the Occi- dental Petroleum Corporation, had concealed a gift of $54,000, in violation of a 1972 federal law that requires publication of the identity of large contributors to political campaigns. (Prior to the effective date of that law, he had already given the Nixon campaign the first $46,000 of a $100,000 pledge.) Obviously, Dr. Hammer had some powerful reason for keeping his support for Nixon quiet. Images Versus Realities Most Americans know that Richard Nixon He enjoyed a reputation as an his achieved it through highly publicized but role in the minor actually exposure of Alger Hiss in the late 1940s. On the strength of that single act and a great deal of rhetoric, Richard Nixon was catapulted into a prominence that carried him all the way to the White House. Close watchers of the former President, how- ever, have never been fooled by Nixons anti- Communist image. The real Nixon was re- vealed to increasing numbers of Americans after he became President, as he blazed a trail to one Communist-Socialis- t goal after another. It was Nixon who brought legitimacy to Mao who engineered fantastic increases in the size and reach of the federal government; gloried in our shameful capitulation in Southeast Asia, and who delegated enormous power to Henry Kissinger and a host of other appointees. Nixon was never a real anti- Richard No, Communist. But for some who might require additional evidence to support our view, we suggest a look into the background of Nixon- contributor Armand Hammer. This is the story that ought to be headlined, not the mere fact of Hammers violation of a campaign contribution law. But dont waste time looking for this story elsewhere, because you wont find it. In 1921 the senior Hammer sent Armand to Russia, where he was warmly received by the Bolshevik leader. Young Armand had brought along large shipments of goods needed to sustain the revolution. In return, he was given a monopoly in pencil manu- facturing, an operation that netted him over $1 million in profits the very first year. Lenin later inscribed a portrait of himself to Comrade Armand Hammer, as evidence of his affection. Hammer stayed on in the Soviet Union until 1931. During this period he amassed a fortune by gathering the priceless art treasures that had been stolen from the Russian aristocracy by the Communists. He then took his fortune out of he was one of very few able to do so Russia and made additional millions producing whiskey and raising livestock in the United States.
