The most effective service one can render is to help by his saving more people at steadily increasing wages, thus producing a higher and higher standard of living. That is the way to relieve poverty. That is the way to conquer suffering, poverty, disease and ignorance. As individuals and private institutions, we must use a margin of what we produce to help the old and the ill, but without neglecting this, the greater service is to help build up the productivity of our country, to lift the burden of toil from the backs of men, and to bring about more abundant production. This is the way to conquer suffering, poverty, disease and ignorance. By diligence and hard work he builds it up to the point where he is employing, let us say a dozen men. He pays them good wages. He produces a useful product that is of benefit to those who use it. As the business continues to grow, he employs more and more workers. In the long run, who has been more helpful to his fellows? The man who supplies jobs and good wages for an increasing number of people who live well all their lives from their earnings, and their sons and daughters follow them in their place of employment, or the man who gave his money away, relieved a little temporary suffering, but contributed nothing to the building up of a productive society that would furnish a good living to more and more people? - Howard E. Kershner, in Christian Economics, November 1967. Bob Salter An unusual column this Ive thought of it many times and felt that it might be premature, but now I feel that if 1 wait any longer, it would serve no purpose. Many people have been asking my advice on what to do in the cf itical days ahead. People who have heeded the warnings and have food and other things stored want to know what to do next. Some have formed groups for survival, feeling there would be safety in numbers. Others have no friends and will have to go it alone. If you prepare for the worst, and nothing happens, what has it cost you? Time and money? No. not even that. It can always be used. On the other hand, if you don't prepare and something happens, what has it cost you? Maybe your life. As you know. 1 believe in being prepared.
