Show The Paper That Dares To Take A Stand February 27, 1975 The Utah Independent Page 3 LIBERTY AMENDENT Continued from page 2 a NEW PAPER BOY ON COURSE people without proper constitutional authority in the future by any group, anywhere, foreign or domestic, through any contrivance other than a properly adopted constitutional amendment. This restores our independence as a nation of free and sovereign States functioning under the limited powers specified in the contract with our people, called the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES. It reestablishes a rule of law, rather than the whimsy of people holding political office. It appears that these are substantially the reasons Mrs. McLauchlan detailed in her letter, and one can but wonder why she cites these clear purposes and then says she opposes the only instrumentality available for attaining them. Certainly the devout wish of every American (although couched in legal language) is contained in the first section of the LIBERTY AMENDMENT, pending in Congress as H.J. Res. 23 and already approved by seven States. That first section states: The government of the United States shall not engage in any business, professional, commercial, financial or industrial enterprise except as specified in the Constitution Particular attention is called to the last six words above EXCEPT AS SPECIFIED IN THE CONSTITUTION which reconfirms every delegation of power and authority contained in the Constitution; yet this has the capacity of establishing a line of demarcation between the powers our government possesses properly and those which have been usurped by that government and must be restored to the States and the people as the Constitution intended. Thus it would appear that the ideal cited by Mrs. McLauchlan who quoted James Madison, author of our Bill of Rights, that a Constitutional Amendment should not tend to destroy the principles and efficiency of the is LIBERTY the served Constitution by AM ENDMENT, which has the single purpose and ability of restoring our Constitution to full force and effect. The Equal Rights Amendment was voted down It appears in the Utah House of Representatives that Utah has become one of the stalwart states in holding back the passage of this insidious proposed amendment. As most Americans are now aware, the leftwingers knew well in advance when the E.R. A. was going to pass the United States Congress and were well prepared to start pushing for ratification in the state legislatures. They were even well financed with federal tax monies with former President Nixon supplying a White House staff to promote its passage. Even now, it is learned that Betty Ford is telephoning the legislators of the various states encouraging them to vote for E.R. A. This is disgraceful for the woman who is supposed to be the first lady of our country to be applying political pressure to state legislators. It is almost as disgraceful as the president using federal tax funds to promote a certain piece of legislation. Mrs. Fords actions do, however, give all Americans a good idea of where she (and the president) stands politically right t. For one can readily squarely with the frantic discern the effect E.R. A. would have upon our government and our rights as citizens. The result would be a tremendous concentration of dictatorial powers in the executive branch of the government with a resulting devastating loss of freedom by the people.
