There ii evidently e epall of aeeond eight upon the astern, blaga. Their facet are turned eastward and downward. They are w ratling with the mineral problem; they hare already penetrated aiz hundred feet into the bowela of the earth, and their bowels yearn for more light in the tame direction. The spiling wall crumbled, lotting off 700,000,000 gallons of water stored behind. The water rushed down the ravine with a terribla roar in a solid man 20 feet high. Tha first in tha line of tha sweeping flood wu a atone waste gate bouse, the wooden roof of which wu swept onward until drawn into tha whirlpool , whan it wu crushed to match wood and thrown into tha air; not even a stone of tha walla remained. Down through tba narrow ravine, 100 feet wide and one mile long, the flood swept on. The sidu were fairly dug out clean in an instant, for fifty feet, until the edge of the embankment wu almost perpendicular. Through the pine woods on one aide of tho ravine tha watera tore up tba largest trau and twisted them around like straws, pulled up by the roots and carried them onward down the decline. A large barn wu taken up bodily and carried about fifty feet, when it struck a tree and wu broken in two piecu. Tho next wu G. W. Olney's dwelling house, one of the flnut in the village. Tha rushing mass struck this broadside, and completely cleaned out the rear and front walls. The ends stood, and strange to say, supported the roof undor whiob the water poured in a solid stream twenty feel high and thirty feet widis When the dam first broke the gap was about twenty feet in width. This incroued rapidly after tbe water had once gained .passage through it, and continued to inoreua till nearly the entire aeulion, eighty feet wide, bad been dutroyed. A cottage that stood un tho opposite side of the road from Olney's wu taken up, whir.ed around on the surface for a time and tiuux. wnt down. Three or four other small dwelling houses were taken up and borne along till they crashed together and sunk out of sight. The water from the reservoir now reached Kettle creek, turned down toward Chori7 Talley, Jamaville, Loaville, Sloneville, and Mew Worcester. J. A. Smith A Co. 'a woolen mill stood at the bad of this pond. Ia front was a dam which had withstood many a severe tat, but it crumbled under tho immense pressure brought upon it, and gave way. The waters of the pond wore added to tbo mass, and the mill, a substantial brick structure, wu next struck and crumbled of the building wu in till three-fourtruins. A short distance below wes the Botiomly mill, a wooden structure about fifty fret square. This wu lifted bodily to the top of the rushing waters and on it wu swept at a terrific rale, whirling and turning it in all directions, till it struck Ashworth & Jonas mill. This wu the bat mill on the stream and ono of tho bat in tho country. It wu a substantial brick structure, four storiu, with an ell for a boiler house. Tbo Botiomly mill struck this all with terrible force, knocking it to pieces. The Uottomly mill wu as completely demolished by the shock as though it were blown up, and nothing more was seen which could be recognized u tha mill, Ashworth & Jones milk wu in ruins in an instonL Mr. Jonu also lul a large barn, which wu crushed like an eggshell. For more than a mile before reaching the stone arch briego at Curtie pond, it bored a hole down into the road bed of the Boaton and Albany railway, making a gap about eighty feet long and forty-fiv- e or fifty feet deep. .The water then found it way Into Curtis' pond. The devastation at this point will bo u costly u any along tho entire route. Tho flood reached Loaville about two hours after the dam breko and atruek the s et mill, owned by Albert Curtis, with torriflo tores. It gave way and erum bled into ruins, juid the dam wu carried away. Three boura after tbe dam broke away tbe effect wu felt at Mew Worcuter. The course of tha atresia from tbe raurvoir through the other villaga, is nine mila, showing that the water advanced at the rate of three milu an hour. Tho first milo, however, wu made in thru minutes. At a few minula put nine one and of Curtis St Marble's largo brick ibop gava way, falling into tha stream. About a q jarter of tun, tha double arch bridge on the Baton end Albany railroad, below Curtis A Marble's shop, gave way. After the at oond break in the B. St A. railroad, tho mill of tho Wicks Manufacturing Company at South Worcester wu destroyed. The water then prohd out over a scriu of moadowa in the south part of the oity, causing general Itii impossible to ati-ma- te Jpundation. tbo loss . Fialla la Appa . CL ' York, March 81. Hdor?
