Show GREAT WORLDS FAIR tie legislature meets in special session QUESTIONS TO KE considered may chicago add 8 to its bonded bebau to provide for a fair site and otherwise springfield SP KINGFIELD july 23 special pursuant to a call issued by gov filer flit general assembly met in special session at noon to consider three subjects namely A constitutional amendments aut horzing the city of chicago to add to its bonded debt for the worlds fair to pass such laws as may be needed to authorize the use of the west side or city parks for fair sites and to alow park commissioners to issue bonds for fair purposes and to biye to the city the richt of eminent domain to condemn property may be needed for uses connected with the fair this meeting is watched with a good deal ot anxiety oy the various committees eliat have the responsibility for the ful man ur ement of the fair if the legislature evinces 1 similar spirit to the fair as was exhibited by the city council of chicago then it would be better for the reputation of the city and its continued prosperity if new york or even st louis had been selected aa the site for the exposition As a constitutional amend ment lias to be published at least oliree months prior to the day of election the legislature must get through with the city bond question so that the publication may begin by alie ad or ad of august this edyes alie members only about echt dalp to do this part of their work in as usually they do not hold a meeting on saturday this would give ample time if alie members were practically unanimous on the question as a constitutional amendment does not like a bill have to be read three days in each house but is another important matter on which action must be taken before the business can be formal ly transacted this election may occupy considerable time as there are several candidates and riach of them thinks his own election is alie most important question engaging alie attention of alie state there is a great scramble for the position as the member alio secures it 13 likely to be elected reelected re to the legislature which convenes next winter then alie fact can be no longer be concealed conce alad hat there are many members several of whom are from chicago who do not look with favor noon the proposed amendment they hold it iq not just to impose a burden of upon alie taxpayers tax payers of for a fair which will be a benedit bene tit not only to the state ut to llie whole northwest there is a probability that may have in luence enough to shape the legislation of the session so that it will result in but little benefit to tho fair then even though the amendment should bo passed in the form requested by the fair directors will the voters then adopt it at the election ia november it liaa become apparent eliat the fair directory are not quite in touch the majority of the tax payers as to alie management of the exposition then alfo action of the city council which practically denied the directors the lake front or any portion of it for alie fair has s t alie peo ale to discussing the whole question As alie small tax payers who are in a large majority in chicago cannot at present quite perceive the benefits alie fair will bring to them they are disposed to saddle the whole expense of alio exposition on the merchant princes and kotlier capitalists whose incomes will bo vastly increased by it altogether alie directors are experiencing considerable difficulty with the baries and few seem to envy them labors and honors |
