the report judge powers and bones and bacon of salt lake and keeler and john A cole two experienced waterworks water works men of chicago were present and spoke on the subject 1 I he cost of the works would not be less than taft company expected to furnish of their own money ind to bond the works for the balance but this they could not do unless it could be shown that the works would pay interest at the rate of 7 per cent they lid not expect to start in with over five hundred water takers at an averice of 10 per annum and unless the city could pay at least per annum for hydrants it donld be impossible to bond the works the city would derive great benefits from a ays tern of waterworks water works and of curse they wanted a first das system or none at all an additional tax of two milla on the dollar gouid produce a sufficient amount of revenue the gentlemen to de quite surprised when informed that the city tax fortha present year was only three mills on the dollar and referred to eastern cities where taxes of from 1 to 6 per cent were paid the majority of the members oi the 4 council expressed their opinion on the subject they could readily see that the city would derive from al system of uttley did not consider that provo cily coald afford to pay per annum for hydrants at present complaints were already numerous concerning high taxes and this would incur additional expense the city would no doubt grow and be able to pay this sum in a few epars but at present it could not be done there seemed to be some misunderstanding as to tha tenor of mr jones remarks at the time the franchise was granted the members of the council had understood der stood that the waterworks water works company did not expect to make any money for the first two or three years the company furnishing their own money to build the works mr jones explained that ho had meant tatt they merely wanted enough money to pay the interest on the bonds they expected no returns from the of the com banys own money for several years to come tho council adjourned without coming to any definite conclusion the question will be taken up in regular order on monday benine next ne |
