Show THE UTAH commission REPORT the Minor itys side of alie case two of the five members of the utah commission john A mcclarnand ernand and A B carlton have filed with the secretary of the interior a minority report they also submitted a minority report last year alie report received today to day the reform in utah is progressing favorably and far beyond our most sanguine anticipations utah is forging to the front among the bocky mountain states and territories and will he compared favorably with any of them in the enterprise of tier citizens the fertility of her valleys alie richness of her mines and the flourishing condition of her cities and towns A great deal of capital is being investigated in utah by non cormons mormons in city lots farming lands mining properly and such investments are as safe there as in any other state or territory that is to say there is not the slightest danger of insurrection nor in our opinion is there any danger of adverse legislation that will jeopardize security or property rights apart from the sexual offen cea which are decidedly on the decrease the mormon people of utah will compare favorably with other communities for peace good order sobriety honesty and industry the commissioners say in their opinion the maj orty of the mormon people have wisely resolved that alie practice of polygamy should be abandoned we are thoroughly satisfied say the commissioners that the work of reformation in utah 5 progressing rapidly and thatis will soon result in a ul issue without a resort to legislation that is prescriptive of religious opinion our view may be epitomized in a few words punish criminal action but religious creeds never the commissioners are adverse to any further restrictive legislation by congress believing the present laws are sufficiently stringent and that they will accomplish all that can be reasonably required of legal coercion the report recommends the adoption of an amendment to alie federal constitution ution prohibiting the institution or practice of polygamy in any form in the states and territories or other places over which the united states has exclusive jurisdiction the commissioners in conclusion say we have no disposition to defend alie cormons mormons against all that has been alleged against them but we believe they are entitled to be treated with justice and humanity that they are not influenced fluen ced by the same causes that have changed and ameliorated other peoples churches and other creeda we also believe that they have common sense and by the exercise of this valuable attribute they have found out that polygamy must gowe believe that the reat mass of the mormon people are et to go on with this reform and that they will accomplish their work in spite of any influence that may bo attempted to be exercised by a few fanatical old polygamists |
