to each eye ho was tried in one case today to day mrs bohan was in court and made a vain endeavor to save her fiend husband from the punishment due his crime her testimony was given unwillingly when the jury brought in a verdict of guilty tho prisoner betrayed ao sign of nervousness other than a covert glance at his sightless wife he will be tried on the second count and it is believed justice garretson will give him the full penalty thirty years A CHICAGO sept 18 Chi cagos burglars are becoming highwaymen this afternoon a lady was assaulted and robbed on one of the principal streets of the city aud in the presence of hundreds of people the affair occurred oa the west side of dearborn street immediately south of washington street mrs pedrick a resident of california visiting relatives in this city was walling southward carrying several bundles at the alloy a young man stepped out and knocked mrs pedrick down grabbed her pocketbook and was off in an ini stant he flew southward and was soon lost in the crowd mrs pedrick was helped to her feet she was covered with mud but with tho exception of a bruise on the shoulder where the thief struck her she appeared to be uninjured she cried bitterly and was very much excited and nervous the police are hunting for the fellow for two or three months past a large number of petta burglaries in the vicinity of western avenue and madison street in this city have annoyed the police exceedingly the local papers opposed to mayor roches administration have been unsparing in their condemnation of the police for inefficiency while the au ties have been exercising remark able vigilance As a result of a careful investigation they have gathered in a remarkable gang of burglars four boys aged eight ten twelve and thirteen years and tho youngest william morgan proves to have been the captain his lieutenant is wm sullivan a ten year old lad henry the eldest was the general utility man for the gang george hopkins aged twelve is a recent addition and is yet but a novice the boys are all of respectable parental e and their relatives are thunderstruck at the revelations concerning their precious progeny numerous burg laries which were reported to the police and were laid to old and experienced cracksman cracksmen cracks men were confessed to by the doughty little captain they had been holding a regular carnival of crime no house was safo when they crawled around in the back yard as was their usual method of attack their usual plan was to saw a panel from a door morgan who is quite diminutive could easily get through the aperture thus made and admit his companions the particulars of a dozen burglaries were detailed to the magistrate in the police court this afternoon showing that these boys had within two months stolen almost everything arom candy and jewelry up to a horse ahe latter animal they really stole from a barn and drove it away the intention of selling it but finding they were liable to get into trouble allowed it to go after driving it about for half a day in all the houses they entered they took every key they could get and meant to fit out the members with a good set that would unlock any resolution the correspondence in relation to the chinese treaty A letter dated yamon the foreign office to minister denby in regard to the coming of chinese to this country contained bitter complaints of violated treaty obligations and of the cruel outrages upon the chinese the original project submitted to mr chan ten hoon by secretary bayard under date of january 12 1887 embodied a proposition that for a period of thirty years beginning with the date of the exchange of the ratification of this convention ven tion the coming or j edum to the united states of chinese laborers prohibited and its subjects to this country part of this document however is in reply to bayaras bayards Ba yards project it declares first that china proposes to punish chinese laborers who have never been to the united states and who fraudulently attempt to secure entrance into the united states and that as china does this of her own accord and for the protection of their subjects there is no necessity for fixing any limitation of time second that chinese laborers with property or relations m the united satisfactorily prove the same and must henceforth when leaving the united states for china deposit with the consul general at ban francisco a statement showing this to be the case or otherwise they will not be entitled to return third chinese shall be permitted to go through the united states in transmit for other countries fourth the exempt class of chinese subjects such as teachers merchants etc if possessed of certificates shall be permitted to land without detention under any pre the troops to protect the chinese A treaty of extradition by which chinese criminals will be delivered up is also suggested united states is asked to reduce the duty upon rice imported from china on april 18 1887 mr bayard transmitted a draft of the convention to the chinese minister and invited him to meet him at the department tor the consideration of the subject the correspondence closes with a notification by bayard to the minister of the ratification of the treaty by the senate enclosing the two additional dit ional amendments adopted by the senate and the ministers reply when he says tk
