purpose of the meeting had not been fully understood by the majority present and before the motion was put ne would like the matter thoroughly ventilated it would be as well to abate aliat the intention and the desire of the cull meant are we to celebrate as cormons mormons Mor mons loyal leaguers lib brals party or are we going fo celebrate on the broad platform of american citizens Y heretofore each party has had its own celebration aiwas the case on the baat fourth eliut if we are now going to sink our feelings as cormons mormons and gentiles let it be known so that there may be a clear understanding and that all may go to work harmoniously and fix matters up and have a good time let na have a county celebration so that everybody from all parts can meet and adako handia irrespective of any party I 1 feeling mr V C A smoot baid that he had met to join with all parties in having a a good celebration the sectional acel inga existing between local parties be drowned at least for one day and everybody join in to properly celebrate our natal day mr A thought in view of the situation that it would bo well to thoroughly understand what we intend doing on the fourth before the committee were appointed hon W N said so far as he was concerned he was ready and willing to doall that lay in hi pur tu secure a proper and routing celebration he thought tor once everybody put all sectional feelings and all parties go to w ork with but one object in view viz to properly pio perly observe thu fourth of july mr said that whatever may have bean atie past or whatever may be rankling in the minds of sume men in relation to the past he waa in favor of celebrating the day of our nations birth ini loyal and patriotic manner when everybody no matter whom he might be could come together 01 the broad plane of citizenship and participate in the celebration of alie birth of those glorious principles eliat underlie our great government he did not care what religions belief a person had he felt that he could join in all on eliat day and have a good time was there any tiling in the way to prevent it whenever hemet he met for that purpose hit religious belief was left behind and hs met as a citizen in common with all obbera but if us he had said the dominant church in utah all such things lib wanted nothing to do with the he would just as soon put his foot down upon his own church if it attempted to do this but if on the other hand we all go in as citizens with the one object in view laying aside all feeling she was heart and soul in favor of a celebration and he would do all he possibly could to make it a roberts moved tact we celebrate the fourth of july as citizens it was seconded the chairman stated that judee dus enber rys luction was and it not being entertained by the chair as an amendment to the motion it had DO effect mr said it was true that he was young ae a citizen of provo and probably it would looked better had he taken a back seat but he wanted to be a citizen anil as a citizen lake part in the celebration and ho wanted the gentlemen present to understand his in the premises I 1 the motion of mr W D roberts was put
