Show IS IT A FALLACY LICENSE OR prohibitions ONE OR THE OTHER the present delicy strongly and logically denounced correspondence of the somewhere it is written he that howeth to the wind the whirlwind but we will here venture the remark that if we continho con to sow brandy in soda water and sly drinks behind prescription esses we will not fail to raise a full crop of drunkards in provo the manipulation of the prep Timed prohibition in provo alias he city of drug stores is beneath the notice of the most remote town or village in the county other than in terms of ridicule and contempt many cities in the east have passed laws forbidding for biding screens or blinds to be placed in the door ways or windows of saloons or barrooms bar rooms in order that dram drinking may be held up to the light and seen in its true colors but in pious provo we seclude our liquors in drug stores so as to give it a land of medicinal tinge and vainly endeavor to dress our municipality in a sham respectability sham 1 say for it is far too gauzy to appear like temperance in a place where the city lockup hardly holds all the inebriates on the eve of a general holiday perhaps these criticisms are uncalled for perhaps our city authorities are trying to establish some kind of a principle the benefits of which when fully developed they intend to unfold to us in all their beauty if so I 1 must freely admit it is far too profound for my reasoning faculties at present and in the language of the day I 1 fail to catch on but then some might say dont lot us get in a hurry let us give the thing a fair trial any time this century will do it dont do to be too fast the world made in a day take it easy all come out right some day yes it will come out all right the city will come out come out in debt debt and drunkenness and the work ingman ing man no mattar whether he is a laborer a farmer a lawyer merchant or mechanic the working man will have to pay for it I 1 signed a petition once and it is my god given right to petition if I 1 so desire for a redress of grievances no matter what any one may say to the contrary and a grievance this liquor selling is most certainly getting to be that petition asked to lave liquor sold in this city not in saloons mind you but mark the language under strict rules and regulations it is being sold today to day without any rule and under no regulations youths scarcely in their tens have been fined for drunkenness and our officers say they are powerless to prevent it all of which confirms me in the opinion that to have it sold under strict rules and regulations is far better than to allow it to be sold in tho manner it is today to day without any my voice and vote has been in favor of temperance and sobriety in provo city for over thirty years and if I 1 happen to differ with any one in the method sought to be adopted for the suppression of drunkenness I 1 am not going to be abused for it if I 1 can help it nor ia it my right or the right of any one to abuse others on account of difference of opinion I 1 am willing to donate as much as any other man in this city towards the enforcement of prohibition provided that is the course decided upon but at the same time I 1 want to be satisfied that tho ie choso whoso duty it is to enforce the law and prosecute offenders are entirely free from taking clandestine drinks at drug stores the question of the hour is do the people of provo really want prohibition hibi tion to be candid really think not it cannot be argued for a moment that the non mormon element support all the drug stores if the non cormons mormons Mor mons alone take down the contents of all the barrels of brandy old bourbon cologne spirits and aser that are shipped to provo then may heaven have mercy on their souls such is case then the consumption of so much spirituous liquor io provo argues that the people thereof do not want prohibition the ordinance is intact today to day but a dead letter on the statute book abile this demand or desire for ardent spirits still remains suppose you make the law more strict ux regard to obtaining liquor then the more subterfuge lying and deceit will be practiced to obtain it with all our fine tactics in regard to controlling cont roling the sale of liquor in provo I 1 am of the opinion that it will be like the young couple when their first baby boy was bom of course there never was such a baby before all the books were ransacked to find a fitting name the most elegant and high sounding ones were thought of but dismissed as not being good enough at last it waa decided after a long research to call him after his father and BO they named him tom and alter all our manoeuvres and fancy figuring I 1 think it will eventually reduce itself to licensing the sale of liquor under strict rules and regulations and then vigor all who sell contrary to law or who make beasts of themselves ia using liquor be this as it may we certainly want to know which we shall have prohibition or license one or the other this laan dlin between the two systems i lous the taxpayer aare tired of the present elate of things and demand a change we nave as good officers in the executive department of our city as tha territory can producer with bound ordinance backing there should be no question aa to the enforcement of tho jw but it would appear from tho way in which the ordinance is broken and ignored every hour of the day that the council is imbecile and powerless and our officers mere figureheads figure heads but such is not the case and we regret very much that in this instance it should be made to appear so S S J |
