first south street east were held the funeral services of general S eldredge in the centre of the room lay the coffin a very handsome one and it was as richly furnished with floral decorations in the apartment sat the mourners and a number of the relatives and former associates of tile deceased the services were con ducted in this apartment by bishop millen awood but u much larger congregation than could possibly be accommodated in the house occupied seats in front of it listening through the open windows A quartette consisting of H G whitney J D spencer mrs edith knowlton and mrs young furnished the singing the opening prayer was offered by elder lonn farr the quartette sang 0 my fill her thou that dwell eat in the high and lu rious place APOSTLE MOSES addressed the assemblage it has always been difficult for me to speak at the funeral of a friend or a brother especially when my attachment for him has been strong I 1 have known brother eldredge tor a great number of years and have esteemed him most highly he was a man whose movements have made a marked impression upon society he displayed strong traits of character from his early boyhood among them being a steady determined perseverance he was true to his frienda and just to his enemies he was not given to hatred or resentment when the shafts of envy and jealousy were showered upon him ho calmly warded them off his powers of codur abuce mental and physical were remarkable and he possessed ability to discharge a vast amount of labor the speaker dwelt at some length upon the personal traits and qualities of the deceased and in appropriate language applied to him the parable of the talents describing him aa a man who bad been diligent and faithful in using and adding to the talents bestowed upon him by his creator he met his death as he met his important duties and trials of life with a calm courage which is beautiful to see and profitable to emulate he had no fear of death and while expressing the hope that he might not be required to linger in suffering he evinced his willingness to abide by the will of god the speaker dwelt upon the teach lago o TACt Mot to alft immortality of the soul its redempa tion through the gospel and the resurrection ur of the dead he spoke oi the deceased as a man who had learned how to live and to die and one who had obeyed the laws of the gospel which entitled him to pass by the angels and the ghods and enter upon an exaltation in tho presence ol 01 his creator in proof of the reward of such the speaker read from the vision to joseph smith and sidney rigdon showing the condition of the dead and expounded the same PRESIDENT JACOB GATES followed in a brief address the deceased had been a presiding officer over a vast body of priesthood aud it afforded the speaker great pleasure to bear record that in all his associations with the deceased in that capacity there had not been a jar nor discord in their counseling ha would fain have had brother eldredge remain longer with us for in him wo lose a staunch and good man and a wise counselor he heartily endorsed the eulogistic remarks of the previous speaker and speaking of the veterans who still live among tho saints he expressed the belief that they would en cam plating on the earth and pass ii g behind the veil find friends with a cordial greeting awaiting them to such death had lost ib sting and the grave its terrors they looked forward to death as tho dawn of a bright day in which they would receive the reward of their labors and sufferings and in which their enemies would have DO power to hin der them in their worship nor oppress them in any way the quartette then sang the hymn unveil thy bosom faithful tomb benediction was pronounced by president seymour B young after which those present were afforded an opportunity to view the remains the pall bearers then bore the coffin to the hearse they were as follows lewis S hills james sharp T G webber john dark abram H cannon le grand young W H bowe WW Eiter J P freeze elias A smith S B young and T W jennings A very long procession followed the remains to the cemetery the dedicatory prayer at the grave was offered by elder abram H cannon by the will of the late horace eldredge Eldr edgo which was executed on december 1886 and filed for probate on tuesday last the follow mg bequests are made to hannah adams eldredge A life estate or interest while she remains unmarried in about acres of farming land most of which is situated in davis county one half of lots 3 and 4 block 26 ogden city survey the east halt of lot 7 block 79 plat A all of lot 1 block the west half of lot 6 in plat A all 1617 and 18 in block 24 plat A and a half interest in the B eldredge block all in this city fifteen shares of
