Show SCHOOL MEETING C D glazier elected trustee for three years DAVE EVANS AND HIS MINORI TY representation IDEAS stormy discussion over the adoption of the financial report pursuant to the call of the school trustees which appeared in THE ENQUIRER the registered voters of prove school district met last at n alie central schoolhouse for alie purpose of electing a successor euc cessor to trustee evan whose three years term had expired there was only a fair atten tanco of registered voters present probably alio meeting was called to order by trustee halliday on motion ot mr geo sutherland mr W H dusenberry was elected chairman mr dusenberry then took the chair and called for dominations for secretary J ohn E was elected as secretary alie published call was then read mr D evans moved that the meeting proceed to the election of trustee the motion carried mr geo sutherland put in nomination thos beesley Mr Talmage nominated evan the retiring officer mr arose and declined stating that lie thought the southeast portion ot alie district ought now to have representation he himself had served alie district a long time long enough to suit him mr booth then nominated clias D glazier mr rawlings nominated joa T mcewan mr evana made a speech he would support T beesley alie liberal party had never been given an office in tins city the majority he ought i to give the minority a representation st least in a school administration beesley was an old and valued citizen and one who would do hia duty regardless of party feeling why not then cadt aside narrow minded prejudice the liberals asked this representation because they represented a portion of the tax paying community he asked for thia in justice to a healthy and growing minority mr booth spoke in favor of thy nomination of mr glazier and in doing so he agreed w ith mr evans in that mr beesley was qualified but he alie speaker believed in the old jacki conijn doctrine that to the victor belonged the spoils mr glazier was a member ot the majority party and entitled to the support iuppo rt of that majority mr berg thought it was no good argument to oner that because mr glazier belonged to thy majesty he should be elected he put in nomination jos B keeler mr keeler however arose and declined mr dan jones attempted to reply to mr bootle and referred to alie action of the peoples party in salt lake in giving ahe liberal party a representation in lie city council he thought it would be a protection to the majority to have minority representation on the board of trustees inthis in this district he said we the liberal party have une fifty of the voting strength of alie town and pay one third of the taxes including the railroads of course mr oan baid he was nut a believer in minority representation it was entitled no place in a free government it w as a poor excuse to ask representation because the individual belonged to die minority it was a poor recommendation to oner in favor ot mr beasley Bec sley if fie wanted to vote for mr beesley lie would do so because lie was the best mau and not because he belonged to the minority applause he vent onto refer to the action in salt lake in connection the municipal election he was in favor of dividing up cities into wards and giving alie wards direct representation sen tation in alie councils he sarcastically referred red to the of certain parties in excluding men of his political laith from political association with them the speaker himself had experienced perien ced something of thid kind applause and laughter mr evans again arose and said he and the liberals anticipated this alie true reason w hy thos beesley would ot receive the support of the majority was because lie w as not a member of alie mormon church mr evans went on to talk about the reason why he and a certain crowd of so called democrats had refused to affiliate with the democrats of the peoples party mr maihen waa in favor of minority representation he believed in doiny to others as we would bo done by hf thought mr beesley was a benl enl leman nut would mr mcewan be aai o lie was known to be a man who would not be wavered by any man or set of men and would be ind in hid action as long as iiii judgment vas convinced mr A D holdaway lid heard things that that ea him he believed in men who were in sympathy with his views and for thai naon n a on he would support mr GL balloting wag then proceeded with metora J L keeber D evans and J E boom being appointed as tellers alie result as announced was as follows for glazier 59 votes mcewan 19 beekley 21 L 1 the report of lie tellers was adopted and C D glazier was declared elected the annual report of the trustees fur the year ending june 80 nas read the official report w ill be found in another column mr holdaway and mi mauws called attention to alie bad condition which omo of the edisol property was in notably the building in which alie meeting was then being held mr maiben remembered alie trustees at ane last meeting that the condition of alie aliouse was not alien acceptable and that aliey had not accepted alie hiding as yet from the contractors mr liddiard stated it was true that alie trustees biad not before the meeting accepted the burldine buil dine but that it had since been accepted the leakage complained of in the roof biad been repaired at alio expense of aliu district the cost being comparatively chinall and the contractors not being to blame mr Halli ilay further explained that the fault of the leakage was not with alie contractors for the reason eliat lie taxpayers had actually refused to levy a tax to cover in the building and work biad stopped for want of funds besides it wai shown by alie plans that alie contractors were not otherwise at fault mr J C stated that he kne w at the time eliat on the roof had been done exactly the archi lecta plans and specification mr evans moved that the sum of 58 expended by the trustees for making repairs on the roof be stricken out and disallowed claimed that ho had point ired out the damage to alie trustees and thought eliat either chev or the contractors be made to pay for repairing alie damage one of the trustees was one of alie contractors and the affair was another credit transaction mr booth pointed out the fact that the money was already paid and he could net see how the trustees could be made lo 10 pay it certainly abo coatric coa trac tora had got tha money and nothing but a suit could bring about its recovery unless the were sued on their bonds W H brown referred to the deplorable condition of the building and if it was the architects fault he ought to be published to the world he did not think however that the as should be disallowed judge dusenberry said that while he would vote to accept the report yet he would say as the old scotch jury said the mon is not guilty ant we ilont want him to do it again the speaker considered that although the trustees may not have moved out as they have done still the taxpayers were more to blame in that they had not provided nt means to complete the work when completion was necessary to preserve the building the discussion continued until nearly II 11 when abo previous question was loudly called for sir evans motion was put and lost there being only about half a dozen voting for it and the question on tte original motion wag then put and carried by an vote claim of the three trustees amounting to 75 each for one years services was on motion allowed mr evans moved that the trustees be instructed to publish the financial statement in the public preas of the city the motion carried the meeting then adjourned |
