Show OUR COUNCIL STILL As will bo seen in our report of the proceedings of the city council this journal was again assailed by the majority much lie same ill tempered manner on two or oliree previous occasions ti unprejudiced reader will marvel at the 0 or renco of tuesday kirbt last and ver properly ask on what pretext this time the liala dozen chronic growl era started that scene mr brown simply stated in his letter eliat lie declined the appointment of alderman because in view of the recent expression of the people of hief ward at the last election relative to his policy while in the council before he would oc doing his ward and himself an injustice in accepting this is the reason assigned by mr brown for his acceptance non of the erred office yet mr Farr crand mr maiben immediately after the reading of the letter substantially tells mr brown that ho is mistaken ma staken or had been misled that the reason given by him was not alie reason at all but the reason was that mr brown had through malicious news paper reports been unduly influenced thero was no mr farrer end mr maiben placing this construction on the action tho above quoted excuse for declining as dishonest his honest and earnest opinion it was the very essence of unwarranted officiousness cious ness if not spitefulness toward this journal for the gentlemen named to attempt to shift the blardo of mr browns declination on to the shoulders of THE ENQUIRER maiben and dunn and john brown were unsparing in their denunciations of this journal for its misleading false and malicious reports of the action of the council such talk is clieaf when gentlemen publicly undertake to make such charge oven against a newspaper they should be prepared to furnish the proofs to sustain them the practice by the majority of the present city council of provo city of chagrin chan rin the with falsifying reports of its actions is becoming altogether too monotonous and stale oar report of the proceedings of the council that offered mr brown the of tho third ward was substantially ly correct and its correctness caa be proven it would not suit some of the gentlemen interested perhaps to have it so proven the other night while our freely charged us with misrepresenting what was said and deao on that occasion they never once pointed out a single misrepresentation they could not we understand it per seccly well and the public understand it also this journal has given expression to the public dissatisfaction at certain official actions on the part of the majority of the cay council it has held up to public gaze and condemnation the conduct of that majority in disregarding abo pledges under which they were elected to office and the tyrannical and antidemocratic anti democratic conduct of that samo majority their treatment cne popular will expressed io numerously signed petition this is the reason why the is unpopular with and feared by its accusers in the city council one thing that the mayor said we deem proper to refer to he stated tact from the report published by the ex it was made to appear that mr brown was begging for the officio and was present to urge his appointment we denounce this statement as untrue hot one word that could be construed into such a meaning appeared in the re r ort we reproduce below every fprd that was used in the report concerning the brown matter here it is the first business busi nesa considered was the appointment of an alderman for the third ward to fill the vacancy caused by ex alderman B W JD riggs jr removing to salt laka city councilor talmae presented a petition from win J lewis and other delegates from the third ward to alie city convention praying the council to appoint mr samuel Li to tho office and moved that mr liddiard be appointed to that position councilor kaiban nominated wm H brown councilor hansen seconded mr tal magdzi motion when the probability of mr browns accepting the position if appointed was discussed councilor maiben stated that mr brown would accept if the council desired him to mr brown was then called to address the council upon the matter and lie stated that he was willing to accept alie position it the council and alie people desired him but not unless there were some foreheads soreheads sore heads who did noi entertain the best of feelings towards him and he understood thero wag a clique at ork doing all they could to lecuru hia defeat in the present matter but he advised the council not to notice it anen followed the usual amount cf tain when the yeas and nays were called showing alie peoples candidate condi date mr liddiard to be defeated and the councile Coun cila majority candidate Mr brown elected we confess our surprise statement disproved as it is by the reproduction of the report itself being a constant and careful reader of the we it seems that be would be abo last man in alie council to seek to do it an injustice now all the ab aae and heaped upon our lie ad on tuesday night last baethe result of the above so called adso and malicious report that waa all that was published on alie matter of mr browns appointment and for that TS are threatened with from tho city council chamber and to be denied the right of an american citizen and a journalist to hereafter report the proceeding of that august autocratic body we can only addin entertain the deepest pity for individuals who utter such vain and silly threats |
