Show P V COAL mines abe lessive leu sive mining being done in the district A correspondent writing to the tribune from schofield under date of may says the first four months of this year wore tho most active in coal operations the pleasant valley mines over had january ast 1st to april inclusive the shipments were pleasant valley mine tons utah central mines t total tons the pleasant valley company sent out eighty thousand tons in 1887 while this year their output was three fourths that amount in one third of a year while the local demand for noal was much larger this than last year the southern pacific company was a purchaser to the extent of sixty bausand tons between january joth and april coal was shipped arom here to the extent of cars jinking very lively times for the railway boys at present men are at the winter quarters mine operated by the pleasant valley company and 55 by the utah central mine making a total of men in all miners are paid eighteen cents per ton after screening over half in screens the average slack in the coal mined is about twenty per cent f the total the winter quarters mine is ten feet thick is worked by a main tunnel run on a level from which drifts have been run upwards in places of a fourth of a mile from which rooms are run 21 feet wide pillars between 27 feet wide these rooms are worked from two drifts feet apart and after meet ing in the middle all the pillars are drawn out except next to the drifts which are left for the purpose of keeping the opening good in time these remaining pillars are taking out thus getting the entire coal seam permitting the ground to como down from above the utah central mine has a vein 28 feet thick which is all taken out except four feet at the top that is left to keep the mine in proper shape while working both mines are well managed by W S sharp who for the past two years has had their superintendence scofield station keeps the agent mr shermer and an assistant pretty busy in handling their shipments today to day they filled out way bill numbered indicating di how many they had made since january As each way bill represents a car the number tells how many cars of coal have gone out except that there wore a few a very few cars of merchandise with the increasing demand for fuel this fine coal mining district promises to bo come a much greater producer the amount and quality of coal hero and the fine facilities for mining and shipping warrant the prediction that the coal business here is only in its infancy SCOFIELD utah may 24 |
