Show that actuated the early patriots; back GOVERNOR DERN The Utah Democrat Published Every Saturday By The L'tali Democrat . Pub. Co., ADDRESS: 32 SO. MAIN STREET CARE Light Printing and Engraving Co. Salt Lake City, Utah Telephone Wasatch 4-9 Entered as Second class matterJuly 18th, 1922, at the Postoifice at Salt Lake City, Utah, under the act of March 3, 1879. A VOICE FROM CALIFORNIA F THIS COUNTRY were in California there would be real estate signs on the top of Twin Peakes, lots for sale, said a very well known Californian to a Salt Lake audience recently. We like the spirit of the Californian, if you have only sunshine and a sandpatch tell the world about it. Not only tell 'em, but convince 'em that what you have is wonderful and create a desire in them to share it with you. There is a real mutual joy and happiness in bringing someone to share with you in real values. But the spirit of exploitation, false advertising, is distructive to sound and stable growth. May we keep such things foreign to the industrial development of our State. Let us lay the foundation for the future prosperity of this intermountain empire. deep, and strong, and true; that there may be expansion without contraction, development without restogression, advancement without retrenchment. financial-adv- enturism, POLITICAL SPORTSMANSHIP yHEN we go down to the athletic field to whoop-er-u- p for the boys who represent our particular school or varsity in football, baseball, or whatever other rivalry we might cherish, we go with red in our eye and determination in our hearts. We go to win. We exert the last ounce of our energy; we shout; we sing our martial songs; we encourage our fellows by every means possible. When the game is over, however, and the final score has been made, we warmly congratulate our opponents, whether victors or vanquished, on their good sportsmanship, and excellent playing, after which we go our way feeling much refreshed. In the old days it used to be hard to do this; and not infrequently sporting contests ended in hot words, and occasionally that which is still more uncomfortable, black eyes; but the better and more far sighted influences have gradually prevailed in the American sport world, until today we know what it means to play according to the rules of the game, and seldom does anyone try to win success by any other means. Naturally our political activities involve rivalry also, and there are times when we take to the field in a fighting mood; still the truce must always follow, in which we extend the glad hand of good felloship to our opponents,, for after all we are good sportsmen and fellow Americans first, and partisens last. Originally we decided who our rulers would be by getting out our weapons and having a revolution. Some of our small sister republics still follow that method. Later we contented ourselves with burning or hanging our opponents in effigy, staging torchlight processions, and beating tin pans and base drums; often we have resorted to muckraking and belittling opposing personalities. But even in politics times are changing, and we see the necessity more and more of dividing strictly along lines of public policy, or, as i often the case in local affairs, on the basis of individual fitness, recognizing always that when the electorate has spoken it is time to bury the hatchet and cooperate for the public good. One of the high lights of Governor Derns message is touching on this very point, and we feel that it will be taken by all parties in the best of spirit. We elect our officers in the heat and strife of partisen campaigns; often our tolerance for our opponents becomes very meager to say the least; and the worst of it is that we let our hatreds rankle sometimes, long after the smoke of the battle has cleared aw'ay, and the issue has been decided. The rivalry within itself is a good thing . There seems to be something in the nature of the human species that demands it; we have thrived on it in various forms since the earliest dawn of history; and we have also suffered from it tremendously when it has been manifested in its destructive forms. So lets remember the analogy of the football game, and tho we fight hard at times, it will be in a friendly way, and the result will always be refreshing, conducive to the better conception of American Citizenship. KEEPING your perusal of the news article on the Salt Lake irrigation project. It is a gigantic program for th agricaltural development of our State. It will bring hundreds of acres of arid land to producing bounteous crops, it will bring many happy homes and prosperous communities, and not least it will vastly increase taxable property and thus add to the revenue of the State and tend to lighten the burden of taxation. One of the solutions to our tax problem is more taxable property. From reliable information it appears that there is an immediate need for effective and intelligent action to increase the immediate benefits of the projects, especially to Salt Lake County. And in doing this it will not detract from other sections that are beneficiaries. We respectfully call the attention of all forward THE call to every citizen of Utah is to do his level best in boosting looking citizens to this matter. We urge the fullest cooperation invite VeBasin ler. Deceased. Stewart, Alerander & Budge, Attys. for Executor.' Date of fist publication Dec. 20, DELIVERS MESSAGE to some of the idealism of the founders of America; back to the fountain sources of the political principles that held true and steadfast the hearts and minds of men in earlier times. There should ring through the land a clarion call to the old Americans, because the Americanism that was given birth long ago has not been improved upon and is still the best political faith that the mind of man has yet evolved. A lesson in the faith and fire of this Americanism should today be blazoned above every school house, every church, every business house and every home. America is very truly the hope of the world. To prove it, if proof were needed let us look at a page in the history of war. When the heroic sons of England were fighting with their backs to the wall they looked into Gods sky and seeing the stars and stripes unfurled on their own soil cried out: There is our hope! And when on French soil the soldiers were dying like flies and fighting in the last extremity they saw an advancing host, and cried out: The Yankees have come, and so great was their joy that they knelt before the dough boys and kissed the hems of their clothing, and looking at the flag they said, There is our hope. When everything hung in the balance down in Italy in those dark days. Utah has an area of about the same number of square miles as the British Isles, and Ireland, Scotland England, Wales. The former supports only about half a million people, the latter about forty million people. Utah has a hundred natural resources where the British Isles have one, so it doesnt take much of a stretch of the imagination to picture what Utah will eventually be when it is given the real touch of capital and enterprise.
