Fatigued after two days loss of sleep and exhausted from driving a team of dogs sixty miles to Nome through a blinding blizzard for seven and one-ha- lf hours in order to deliver 300,000 units of diphtheria antitoxin Monday, Gunnar Kasson reached the stricken city. Kasson accomplished a feat seldom attained by seasoned mushers of the subarctic. For two days he waited on the trail at Bluff with thirteen dogs, headed by Balto of the Hammon Consolidated Gold Fields company, to transfer serum shipped from Anchorage via Nenana from Olsens relay dog team. When Olsens team trotted into Bluff with the precious load of antitoxin, intended to check the spread of the dreaded disease in Nome, the bundle was transferred to Kassons sled. Despite a temperature of 28 degrees below zero and a blizzard fanned by a stiff wind, Kasson carried on. The storm and darkness prevented him from meeting Fred Kohn at Solomon for the last short dash into Nome. lie kept up the pace, however, and reached here at daybreak. Four dogs in his team were badly frozen. Kohn arrived before noon from Solomon after he learned Kasson had missed him. undefeated Leonard Seppalla, musher of the north, met a relay team at Shaktolik, east of Norton sound, and carried the antitoxin to Golofnin, on the north shore of Norton sound, Bering sea, where Olsen took up the race. When those in high positions of public trust betray that trust, there is an attack upon the fundamental fabric of our institutions, said Judge Carpenter in denying motions for a new trial. The fact that Defendant Forbes offered his life to his country in the World war and leceived the distinguished service medal is going to make it all the harder for him. According to the jury, after offering his life for his country, he betrayeu his country trust. "From the verdict of the jury in apparently accepting the testimony of Elias H. Mortinu-v- , the informer, as true, I think th re was evidence here on which a charge of fraud could be brought in any court. This case was heard by the most intelligent jury, by far, that I have ever seen in twenty years upon the bench. "The offer of defense counsel to have Forbes and Thompson examined now by the court to determine the drgree of their culpability is refused. I may say the court was surprised that these two defendants listened to the recital of evidence against them for forty four days, and then did not go or. the witness stand to refute the charges. They- may- - say now, if they desire, their opinion of the jury verdict or the court's fairness, but they will have to go to the newspaper with their stories if they wish to review the evidence in this case. Neither Forbes nor Thompson rose to say anything before sentence was passed. Whpn the tenor of the judges replies to defense counsel indicated the court expected to deal severely with the defendants, Forbes wiped his face with his handkerchief nervously, but Thompsons steady gaze at the judge did not waver. ' The argument for a new trial was opened by Former Senator J. Hamilton Lewis, and all his citations of apparent error in the trial record were, one by one, overruled.
