After all, we should recognize that party lines do not mean much in our state problems. W. Prickett, manager of the Traffic Service Bureau of Utah, who has been retained by the complainants in the present litigation. This case wasr filed early this summer on behalf of various flour and grain dealers of Idaho and Utah, and involves the reasonableness of certain One Way of Seeing It rates on grain and grain products When la the surest sign that a originating in Utah and Idaho points. low is In love? The importance of the hearing comes from the benefits in reduced freight rates expected to result from the final outcome of the case, according to Mr. Prickett. Although the petition was filed by the grain and flour dealers of the two states, the farmers of Utah and Idaho, as well as the jobbers and general business interests, are vitally interested, because of the general prosperity that invariably accompanies the prosperity of the soil tillers. The complaint seeks the equalizing of transportation charges from Western points with the charges on grain and grain products originating in other wheat growing sections of the country. Disparity in rates is pointed out by the plaintiffs in the following instances, among others: The rate from Ogden to Omaha, 990 miles, is 53 cents per hundred pounds, or 31.8 cents per bushel, while the rate from Shelby, Mont., to Minneapolis, Minn., 1000 miles, is 10 cents lower, or 25.8 cents per bushel. From Conquest, Canada, to Port Arthur, Ont., the present rate for 1000 miles is 15 cents per bushel. Statistics from the 1923 year book of the department of agriculture are cited by Mr. Prickett: The increase in the cost of transportation from the farm to the consuming centers is a very important factor in the present situation. The rates from country shipping points to private markets are about 45 per cent above the prewar level. War conditions caused freight rates to advance, the high point being reached in 1920. Since then the price of wheat has fallen to nearly the prewar level, whereas the rates for transportation have remain ed at 45 per cent or more above pre war levels. Relatively high freight rates from producing regions to the seaboard are a serious handicap in competition with other countries in the world's market. The petition then goes on to point out the necessity of an equalization that will permit the Utah and Idaho sections to compete in those markets. Oregon Income Tax Law Repealed Portland, Ore.
