Show THAT THE STUDENTS MAY KNOW For the benefit of those who were not present at last Fridays Friday's student body meeting and who might therefore therefore therefore there there- fore be misled by the garbled report that appeared in the town down papers papers papers pa pa- pers a word of explanation seems necessary Otherwise the stories published pub pub- lisped were so obviously actuated by personal spite as to be unworthy or ot com comment ent Following is a a. part of the story which appeared in Saturdays Saturday's Her Her- ald aid We Ve have the assurance assurance assurance assur assur- ance of the sporting editor of that newspaper that the information was wa furnished by none other than the manager of athletics himself Upon a technicality members of the Utah Chronicle staff and Amici Amidi fraternity yesterday yesterday yesterday yester yester- day afternoon prevented taking a vote upon five amendments to the University of Utah Associated Student Body constitution and thereby automatically caused the postponement of Honor day from December 18 until after the holi holl- days The constitution states that an amendment must be posted on the bulletin board and published in the Chronicle one week before a vote is taken takeI on it According to George Stott manager of athletics athletics athletics ath ath- at the University of Utah the amendments were in the hands of the the- editorial staff of the Chronicle more than a week ago but that instead of putting these am amendments in their proper form forma a a. a story was published about them which it was ruled would not suffice suffice suffice suf suf- fice as a notice Because of the failure to pass on the amendments which affect every athlete at the university in regard to his award Honor day and the awarding of sweaters blankets bath robes and fobs must be he postponed until after the Christ Christmas as holida holidays s The inference contained in the op opening opening op- op pening p- p ening sentence is of course mere pit pir piffle fie as evidenced by the fact that a member of the fraternity in question made the motion to suspend the constitution con COlI- and consider the proposed amendments and that the majority ol of those opposing the motion were either members of other fraternities or non- non fraternity men As to the managers manager's statement that the amendments were in the hands of the editorial staff of the Chronicle more than a week ago we wish to toI state that no amendments were placed I in the hands of any member of the Chronicle staff p prior to the meeting held last Friday and that the editors had received no intimation that an any amendments were to be considered at Fridays Friday's meeting until Wednesday night when a member of the staff asked the president what the nature of the meeting was to be The duty of the Chronicle in regard to proposed amendments is to publish publish pub pub- lish such notice as is submitted bythe bythe by bythe the president of the student body The first and only official notice that has been given the Chronicle by the president during the three months of its publication is the one which appears appears appears ap ap- ap- ap pears in the present issue We regret the necessity of harking back to the incident of Fridays Friday's meet meet- ing but in view of the misleading reports reports reports re re- re- re ports that have been published by the athletic manager we believe that the facts of the matter should be placed before the students |
