Show fN 1 C J l F m t f. f i 1 ff Y f. f THE U s r. r t. t Y l THE UNIVERSITY POWER PLANT The name technical school today almost means an accumulation of laboratories for the experimental demonstration of all aU that is theoretically theoretically theoretically taught therein Our School of Mines could not be considered more than a mere name before the multitude of laboratories which are now being built and equipped were in operation With the rapid growth of the engineering laboratories both in number and size comes the necessity for power to drive the machinery The mechanical laboratory is the ther only one which furnishes its own r power all the others must receive power from elsewhere Our laboratories laboratories laboratories labor labor- are all aU used only for a few hours each day therefore a large amount of power is called for for only a short period of time The rates charged bv by the Utah Light and Power Company for such an irregular lar use almost prohibit the use of their power for running the ma ma- chinery It is found much more mol economical to supply ourselves with the means of generating generating- our own 11 power than to purchase the power The power plant which has been in commission but a few days consists consists consists con con- of a one hundred power horse-power steam boiler a one hundred horsepower horsepower horsepower horse horse- power automatic engine and a sixty Watt Kilo alternating current gen- gen This little plant contains the highest grade of machines of their type that are on the market and they will run with but little at at- The boiler is so connected as to supply steam both to the h heating mains and to the engine so that that- the that the boiler may be fully loaded and l cp oper operating p rating r r. under tinder the highest economy while the engine is running with a avery avery avery very light load and using but little steam An idea of the power needed by bythe bythe bythe the laboratories is gotten when vc are notice that a thirty-horse-power thirty motor is is placed in the dynamo laboratory laboratory lab lab- oratory a fifteen en power horse-power motor will be placed in the metallurgical building budding and that about a twelve power horse-power motor is used in the shops We also use smaller amounts of power at numerous other oth oth- er places on the campus This plant not only improves our laboratory service but makes us in independent independent independent in- in dependent of any commercial com coin pany E. E H. H Beckstrand JUDGE KING LECTURES The University was fortunate in receiving a visit from Utah's gifted orator Judge W. W H.
