Show I I T N a certain class Jan 22 one of our professors read an article from Harpers Harper's Weekly on The English of College Celle College e Graduates in which he lie Culture coincides with the views views the author takes on the subject and added some very strong comments along the same line himself It is not the intention of the CHRONICLE to justify the English of our colleges col col- leges goodness leges-goodness goodness knows it is bad bad bad- but we desire more especially to speak of some side remarks of the 1 1 professor in question concerning local conditions The following is quoted from the above mentioned article Your average average average av av- college man is a kind of in intellectual intellectual intellectual in- in miner in an educational junk heap He is what is termed a good fellow whole large hearted wise in his own conceit and almost crude He greets you with witha a Hello Bill Bill Billand and parts from you with a So Long that reminds one of the western cowboy He is en in his walk in the manner of wearing his hat is not inclined to offer too much of the sidewalk to toan toan toan an underclass man and thoroughly enjoys a good scrap scrap even if it be nothing more than a dog fight No wonder then that you do not find him quoting Shakespeare or Thackeray Thackeray Thack Thack- eray cray or delving into the white lily ness of Keats He dwells in the midst of culture yet is quite apart from it Now says the professor is not every word of that true true true-true true here herewith herewith herewith with us Stand at that window there fifteen minutes and look at the students as they move to and from these buildings Are not too many of them in their walk in their bearing in their manners Look at some of the young ladies Are they not careless in their dress untidy untidy untidy un un- tidy with their hair And are the boys a whit better The very attitude attitude attitude atti atti- tude the very walk of a man often shows his character and discovers much of his training Among the things to be gotten in college is culture culture culture-a a thing of somewhat somewhat some sonic what uncertain definition but of prime importance This in part at least means not only the Z t f d G rf u i aI f i t I f tion ion of knowledge of facts but abilI ability ability abil abil- I i. i ity to make m ke graceful use of of them Ih f Culture includes too a dropping of iV of thought of manner and of speech Either as the writer writ writ- 1 4 er in the Weekly implies too many manyI I students gain little of this culture or else they are indifferent to making it apparent In woi ds not unlike these the professor professor prot pro pro- t 1 fessor gave vent to his feelings in his characteristic way No one can deny for an instant the charges d brought against the college student either by the author of the article in inthe inthe inthe the Weekly or by the professor But for the sake of justice should not the charges have gone farther While standing at his window surveying surveying surveying sur sur- with a critical eye all the people on the campus might not the professor have seen occasionally an instructor or a professor too whose dress is not kept with an orderliness which would bring upon him the accusation of being a dude whose walk is not strictly military and whose greetings are not altogether elegant in their English In fact are not some of our worthy superiors superiors superiors super super- in many respects quite as bad badas as the college student In a word can college professors always acquit themselves of the charge of lack of culture or at least of the lack of obvious evidences of culture They are models for us we presume in all those things we weare weare weare are supposed to seek in a college ca ca- reer Are they always models in inaccuracy inaccuracy inaccuracy accuracy of language in neatness of appearance appearance in in all those things which we students are urged to acquire acquire acquire ac ac- quire rr |
