Whittingham has parlayed the Ute name into receiving early commitments from nine players, including some big-time defensive linemen. So far, the 2006 class is light on skilled players, but you can never have too many talented big guys. In 2001, Patterson had the monumental task of taking over for instant legend Dennis Franchione, who turned around the Horned Frog program in three years before heading to Alabama. Patterson hasn't skipped a beat, leading the Frogs to two 10+win-seasons in four years, including a run at the BCS in 2003. Who has the advantage? -V^,-- Wi£ QUARTERBACKS !! Before last weekend, this would have been hands-down TCU's advantage. But thanks to Brian Johnson breaking the school record for accuracy in a game and Tye Gunn making the SMU defensive backs all look like Ed Reed, the Utes get the edge here. It will be interesting to see how Johnson handles a tough road environment in his first start away from Rice-Eccles Stadium. • ; ••":•; . Edge: Utah ; RUNNING BACKS Quinton Ganther keeps chugging along. Opposing teams are learning that you had better tackle him at the line because linebackers and defensive backs are going to have a rough time taking down Quinton. The Horned Frogs lost starter Lonta Hobbs to an injury, but it's not as big a loss as it seems. Robert Merrill has gotten the lions' share of the carries, accumulating 136 yards on the seasonEdge: Utah RECEIVERS You just have to feel sad for the corner who draws John Madsen. He made it look easy against USU and has established himself as Johnson's go-to playmaker. Thanks to Madsen getting nearly half of Johnson's 21 throws sent his way against the Aggies, the rest of the corps should be plenty rested for TCU. Cory Rodgers has been Mr. Dependable for the Frogs this season, hauling in 16 catches for 120 yards. Derek Moore is the only other Frog who has more than five receptions, with one of his six going for a touchdown at Oklahoma. Matt Grinnnett is the lone senior receiver, but even he has had only three starts in his career. As expected, center Jesse Boone has been the most impressive, ringing up 15 knockdowns and three pancake blocks. TCU has its own top center in Stephen Culp. The senior is on the Rimington Award watch list, and like Boone, is bigger than most at his position. The rest of the line has struggled in the run-blocking department, allowing their backiield to average a meager 2.6 yards per carry. .-<>•• l Edge: Utah ;; , r ; D " L l N E . The revolving door at open end continues as Alex Puccinelli has jumped back ahead of the ineffective Martail Burnett. It doesn't matter what TCU's line does the rest of the season; when you can hold Adrian Peterson to 63 yards on 22 carries, you get a cookie. Edge:TCU • •• M- " ; :".V- : : . , - ^ .,--.. LINEBACKERS It looks like the Utes have finally found their best three Spencer Toone is his usual self and leads the team with 21 tackles. Malakai Mokofisi has been a disruptive force, and Joe Jianonni had seven tackles against USU in his first career start. TCU's linebacking unit is very young, with a freshman and a sophomore making up the starting tandem. But don't mistake youth for untalented; David Hawthorne had two forced fumbles against Oklahoma, and Jason Phillips re; corded seven tackles against SMU. ;. >:•-_ ; . . ; , . ;, ; :: .;. Ryan Smith and Eugene Oates locked down the Aggie receivers, with Eric Weddle and Casey Evans continuing their strong junior seasons. True freshman Brice McCain made his collegiate debut at cornerback in the fourth quarter and looks like another keeper. The Frogs start five DBs, and so far it has paid off. In two games they have allowed only 228 yards passing and one touchdown through the air. Cornerback Quincy Butler and free safety Jeremy Modkins are the senior anchors. ...... •' • " ' - \ r Edge:Even SPECIAL TEAMS $" r$\ .;'""< - W , j -::\:'.\)' lr^;r':"'\ r Edge: T C U ;. - - . . : — , • • • • • • •. All eyes will be on Kyle Whittingham to see how he gets his team ready for a hot humid game in Texas after a short week. Frog coach Gary Patterson has to be commended for taking his team into Norman, Okla., and beating the No. 5 team in the, country, flooring the college football world in the process. However, coaches are often judged with how they keep their teams focused following success, and to, get thumped by a pretty crummy SMU team shows that TCU lost a lot of focus after beating Oklahoma.
