Show FnidAy, OcrobEu Paqe Tin 2, 1987 SPORTS Slow start voetimiies Utah spfeirs shine but U. drops another to Wildcats Eyre, Meyer By Kent Condon Chronicle staff writer Utah, which was hoping to bounce back after suffering consecutive losses to Weber State, came up short again Thursday night 15-- 1, and falling by scores of 1. It was the third loss in as many weeks for the U. and marks the first time in history that the Lady Wildcats have won three in a row from Utah. It was an up and down type match for on the season. But Utah, which fell to the team showed signs of greater consistency and togetherness. Weber State took the first game Utah, which trailed by scores of 3 and later 4, pulled to within one point, closing the margin to 10-- 9. Utah was then outscored 1 allowing the first game to belong to the Lady Wildcats. During that first game, Utah showed the Lady Wildcats many different formations hoping to confuse them. Coach Ann Bricker's team was unable to handle the powerful play of Kim Benesh, Weber State's outside hitter. Benesh was a key player for Weber State and finished the match with 12 kills, the most any player had this night. During the next two games, letdowns by both teams occurred. Utah lost game two by a humiliating score of 15-- 1. It was the third time this season the U. has scored only one point in a game. Utah didn't quit, however. r The determined Utah squad won the third game in convincing fashion by scoring 15-1- 0, 4-- 15 15-1- 3-- 13 15-1- 0. 7-- 9-- 5-- : -- a 15-- 4 victory. During this stretch, sophomore Cori Arndt showed great hustle and ended up on the floor on many occasions. Jenni Eyre, who is back with the team after recovering from injuries, played well and served the team from 1 to 14-- 1. Utah won the game 15-- 4. "Tonight was a definite improvement," EJyre said despite her team's loss. "We've 5-- been playing a lot better and it feels better out there on the court." In a hard fought fourth game, Weber State walked away with a 15-- 1 1 victory and the match. Utah which trailed at one point 10-- 3, fought to within two points winning the next five points. Kills by Leslie Hebertson and Laurie Meyer down the stretch weren't enough and the U.'s losing streak was extended to four games. Bricker, in her inaugural season with Utah, has found winning in major collegiate ranks a difficult task. Last year, while coaching Snow Junior College to a 44-- 4 season, she brought a No. 1 national ranking to the school as well. With the loss, though, Bricker can see her team improving and feels it should be ready when HCAC play begins. In an effort to shake things up, Utah did give the Lady Wildcats a new look. Changing from a 1 offense to a 2, Utah positioned both setters, Arndt and Lisa Resch, on the court at the same time. This new formation moved Eyre to the front row and marked the first time the hometown fans had a chance to see her play there. Eyre finished the match with 1 1 kills and a kill attempt percentage of .091. Utah as a 5-- ' mm ' "" v 6-- team had a .063 percentage which, surprisingly was higher then Weber State's .056 mark. Bricker was pleased with the 2 formation and felt it created greater 6-- consistency for the team. She was also pleased with junior outside hitter Meyer. "I thought Laurie Meyer came off the bench and played well as sub," Bricker said. Now for Utah it's on to Arlington, Texas. There the U. will be participating in the Maverick Invitational this weekend. Bricker looks for this tournament to be good for the team. "We need to use it to gain confidence going into our conference season. If we play well, we have as good of a chance as anyone at the Maverick Invitational," she said. Utah outside hitter Leslie Hebertson goes high in the air for a return. Although Coach Ann Bricker received good performances from several players, Utah dropped its third straight match to Weber State. at the Pie Pigskin Picks tor Pizza Not only is it the beginning of another year of Pigskin Picks for Pizza at The Pie, but it's also are you ready for this Scab Sunday.
