O Angell made a short address address address ad ad- dress to the ladies We dont don't know whether his remarks rattled the tellers or not We think perhaps perhaps perhaps per per- haps not but any way there were 26 votes cast when there were only 25 ladies pres pres- ent Of these 26 votes Miss Noble received received received re re- 13 and was declared elected Yes she was declared elected in spite of the fact that the clause of their Constitution stating that A 1 A candidate to be elected must receive a majority vote of all members members mem mem- members bers present was read by the President When nominations for Vice-President Vice were called for Miss Noble arose and after referring to the few absent marks and the indefatigable interest shown by Miss Allen proposed her name as a candidate candidate candidate can can- for the office Miss Allen was elected Then without very much trouble Miss J Bowman was elected Secretary and Miss Soule Treasurer Miss J Foster sang a song and the meeting meeting meeting meet meet- ing adjourned The Mathematical Society met last Saturday in the University Building The audience was much larger than any previous ous assembled and they were rewarded by bya a most interesting Professor Allen presented an excellent lecture on the origin rigin and development of Algebra Mr 1 W. W L. L Emery read a paper on ons and Mr Hoopes one on Why the Language of Mathematics must be exact Professor Stewart answered the question in a brief but pointed manner Can a term in arithmetic have than more one meaning His answer that it could not opened up a discussion Professor sor Kerr and others taking a hand in which some of the text books used in our public schools received an unmerciful scoring The musical part of the consisted of a piano solo by Miss Ray Riggs a a 1 rollicking sailor boy song by Mr Crawford Crawford Craw Craw- ford and gui guitar guiar ar and mandolin solos by a trio trio- 1 composed of George and Ames These last two exercises were the the- features of the evening The next meeting meeting- will probably be held a week from next Saturday The officers s of the Society are are are- President Professor W.
