Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 8 MCDONALD offseason, which it carried into the 2013-2014 campaign. Continued from page 6 Talking with the late Rick Majerus: It was the summer of 2. and the gymnasts are all classy. Though I'm not friends with any of them and have been hard on them this season in some of my columns, I'll never forget how friendly they have been to me as they've been a part of me chasing my dreams as a journalist. 3. Runnin' Utes make a run in 2013 Pac-12 Tournament: Spring Break in Las Vegas is about as good as it gets, and that's what was on my docket in 2013, as I was going with three of my co-workers to cover the Pac-12 men's basketball tournament. Utah wasn't seen as a threat in Vegas, so it was a blast to watch the Utes win their first round matchup against USC, then stun Cal to move on to the tournament semifinals. That run gave Utah a great deal of momentum heading into the and I was working on a story about in-state recruiting within the men's basketball program. Much of the success the Runnin' Utes had in the late '9os was because of the play of local guys. In the seven years between the time Majerus left Utah and Larry Krystkowiak became the head coach, the Utes struggled mightily to attract local players. I had already talked to Krystkowiak for the story and thought it would be interesting to get Majerus' thoughts about the importance of instate recruiting since he was so good at it. Majerus was the coach at Saint Louis at the time and, since he was a legend, I was scared to death to talk to him. The plan was to make the interview as short as possible. That short interview turned into 20 minutes, as Majerus made me 2012, feel like I was the most important person in the world. We talked little about in-state recruiting. Food and Mormons were the main topics of conversation. It was awesome. Majerus died just a few months after our conversation. I would have always treasured that 20 minutes anyway, but his death made it that much more special to me. I. Feeding the homeless at Pioneer Park: In the fall of 2012, I saw a tweet from Krystkowiak saying he'd just heard some of his players and other Utah athletes had been taking time each Sunday to feed the homeless at Pioneer Park downtown. Thinking this would be an important story to tell, I inquired on the matter. Over the next few days, I got to talk to some of the athletes involved in this service, then I accompanied them to the park on a Sunday. My eyes were opened that day to the fact that extreme poverty and Tuesday, April 22, 2014 BASEBALL hardship is a problem even in Salt Lake City something I knew but never had to confront. I was also so impressed with these athletes for being so selfless in their desire to help others with no thought for what they'd get in return. While covering sports has been a blast over the past few years, in the end, journalism is all about the people, and I'm thankful I could work with a lot of good ones here at the U. I'm grateful for the sports information directors who help us reporters work with athletes and coaches, and I'm forever appreciative of those athletes and coaches who are willing to have random strangers put voice recorders and notebooks in their faces so we can tell their stories. There are some special people involved in Ute athletics, and I'm going to miss working with them on a daily basis. "Definitely just know our place and know where we stand," he said. "I mean we're here for a reason and go out to UVU and all play together. Really, play our best baseball." Mid-week games can cause problems in terms of training and the flow of a team, but Schuman believes getting the win against the Wolverines will put Utah in a good place to compete in the weekend series against the Wolfpack. "We definitely need this win on Tuesday to get us rolling for the weekend," Schuman said. "Definitely some momentum rolling in for the weekend, get the guys positive and ready to play for this weekend." Tonight's game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem. r.mcdonald@chronicle.utah.edu i.smith@chronicle.utah.edu Continued from page 6 Neet tweetlennaniac tmeteu; need more tweeter, speakwtet w ed r ee ta ownx t eer tetw twetwa I ker R Check out our newly redesigned website tweet a little haraerspeakt:rideee tt r need more tweets? heard on the twittertwee need more tweet SPaaeelalkwwt:weeittteeddro tnwidiot hm in tW www.dailyutahchronicle.cor tter twitter twitter tW etglg, r need re tweets? t we tWI tweet al ittle need more tweets? twittertitter tw6,_ e ee ne mal weet twee.flemagiac:pilaz tweet alittle har erspeaktwitt( need more tweets? :wittertattpr tw tweetle tertwee twidia ni weer twee t ea rd on speak twitter maltweete • r e twittert tweet a li e naraerspea ;.? twittert need mor wee et • n the tw e et rtter itter itteE eee need more tw :wittercept weeet twidiot speak twitter maltweete maltwee te riecl ar need more t eets? >eak salt weE et a litt tweetwal kern eete weer ■ lemaniacgz twist, reee, ee ter heard on t -t ee rR tertw etts eet e tweeine hears on the t eet n ea d ore twee I etc speak twitter twirt maltweete altwee heart on he tweett= need more tweets?tweetwalkermaltwee tweeyemaniac:p1= tweet alittle haraerspeak twitt( • need more tweets?
