Ben Jasarevic STAFF WRITER With last Saturday's matchup against Colorado being the last chance for the seniors on the No. 36 Utah women's tennis team to showcase their talents, they surely didn't disappoint. The Utes were able to break a seven-match losing streak against Pac-12 opponents, beating the Buffaloes 4-1. The win for Utah also kept Colorado winless in conference competition. Despite being the heavy favorites heading into the match, the Utes came out of the gate a little sluggish. The Buffs came away with the first victory of the match when Luis da Rosa and Sarah Richter could not overcome an early deficit, dropping the first doubles match 8-2. In the No. 1 slot, however, the duo of Tereza Bekerova and Paige Miles knotted things up at one apiece for the doubles point, winning their match, 8-4. With things tied up, it all came down to the final slot to decide which team would get the doubles point. In that deciding match, seniors Sarah Pham and Callie Craig got off to a horrid start, surrendering five straight sets to go down 5-0. "I think we were just kind of nervous because it was our last home doubles match ever," Pham said. "Then we realized that we had to get our act together." After realizing that, Pham and Craig elevated their game to a new level as they were able to delete the deficit and win the match, 8-6, clinching the doubles point for Utah. "After we went down 5-o, me and Sarah just started laughing. We were like, 'Alright, we gotta to pull our stuff together,'" Craig said. "We went to the back and talked for a minute. Started from a beginningpoint mentality, and I felt like we kicked butt from there." In singles play, the Utes built upon their lead when Richter defeated Colorado's Carla Manzi in the No. 4 slot, 6-2, 6-1. In her final home singles match, Miles followed suit by winning her matchup, 6-3, 6-3, to go up 3-o on the Buffaloes. The Utes clinched the match when da Rosa won in three sets in the sixth slot, 6-2, o-6, 6-4. Colorado avoided the sweep when Nuria Ormefio defeated Craig in the No. 3 slot, 6-4, 7-5, giving the Buffaloes their only point of the match. Because this match was the regular season finale, Utah decided to recognize its three seniors on the team before the match — Pham, Craig and Miles. Head coach Mat Iandolo said last week that this senior class is the most successful class since 1992. "It's definitely bittersweet," Craig said about senior day. "I thought I would be okay, but the closer it got to senior day, I got more emotional and realized it's over. It's gone by so fast." Utah will next compete at the Pac-I2 Championships on April 2528 in Ojai, Calif. b.jasarevic@chronicle.utah.edu 7. juniors and really want to take this program to the next level. It was a lot of fun." Hurst echoed her coach and teammate and is looking forward to the friendly competition she and Winterton will have until the end of their Utah careers. "I think we work well together, so it's fun to see how fast we can go in our races," Hurst said. "It will be fun to see who has it at the end of the season and who has it at the end of next year." Alissa Atisme finished off the record-setting trifecta by running a 12.03 in the ioo-meter dash. The new mark came after Atisme almost didn't run at all. When she got to the meet, her name was missing from the events list. "I didn't know my lane assignment or anything, so that was pretty nervewracking," Atisme said. "I was like, `Well I don't know what that means.' I had been looking forward to this meet for a while, so I was really hoping to get to race, and thankfully it all worked out." Kepler and his staff fixed the oversight with meet officials, and Atisme dashed her way into the Utah record books. "Alissa had been around it all year long. It was just a matter of time and hitting the right race," Kepler said. With three new school records in one weekend of competition, the Utes are showing growth, and Winterton said if there's a rivalry on the team, it's about not being the runner who's being left out of the fun. "There is a new passion with everyone," Winterton said. "Maybe there is a rivalry inside the team because you don't want to be the one being left behind and missing out on the success. There might be little bit of jealousy, but as long as you are helping the team, it's good." r.miller@chronicle.utah.edu Follow us on Twitter! tivittex.cotnitheChirCigy news can be inspiring, too.
