Because of inclement weather this week, the Utes had another pair of games postponed. The team has had extra time to prepare for the Beavers. Thanks to the additional days of study, Utah has made some changes to adjust to Oregon State's style of play. "It's always nice to try and get some more wins under our belt before we go play another Pac-12 series',' says head coach Amy Hogue. "But I think watching video on Oregon State was still a really useful day:' One of the adjustments that will be made will be on the mound. Because of the improvement Hogue has seen in Sammy Cordova, the head coach has decided to trust the freshman in Pac-12 games and will give Cordova opportunities this weekend against the Beavers. "Our freshman pitched the best game I have ever seen her throw in game three against UCLA," Hogue says. "I think if she throws like that against anyone else in the conference, then we have a shot to win:' Another place that Hogue has been experimenting with is the right field spot. Junior Marissa Mendenhall started the season at the post, but the team has since seen Shelbi Everett and Trina Gomez play the position. Heading into Friday's game, it is still up in the air who Mon-Thursdav II am II pm 1 ridav & Saturdav 11 am 1 dill Sunday 12 pm 11 pm will claim that role. "I think we will continue to rotate that spot": Hogue says. "We are kind of just waiting for someone to really run with that position. We are essentially picking someone to help our offense or help our defense. We have a couple of power hitters that can play right field, and then we have a couple that can really play that outfield spot" Up until this point, Utah has played a total of eight conference games, but has only been able to muster up one win in those games. Hogue attributes this to competing in the Pac12, which she claims is the hardest conference in the country because of the high-caliber teams involved. Right now, all three conference opponents that the Utes have played against thus far — Washington, Oregon, and UCLA — are ranked in the top 25 in the nation. UCLA, who Utah took to the brink in its final game last weekend, has been a mainstay at the top of the ranks, and is currently ranked No. 3. Despite the high rankings of their opponents, Hogue believes that the Utes' time is upcoming. "Obviously, it is extremely difficult;' Hogue says. "I think we are getting there. I think we are starting to turn a corner as far as knowing at least what it is going to take to win games in the conference:' Friday's game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. MDT at Utah Softball Stadium. m Like us on Facebook! |
