Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Thursday, January 30, 2014 ADAMS GYMNASTICS Continued from page 6 Continued from page 6 not mean all that much. NCAA officials don't seem to care as much about actual progression in the educational system for these athletes as much as they do about athletes staying eligible to participate in their respective sport. The statement the NCAA made is absolutely correct. College is about getting an education and not throwing touchdowns or making baskets. Unfortunately, though, the NCAA is a multi-billion dollar business that thrives on the money made by college athletes, specifically football and men's basketball players. If the NCAA is going to play the education card, then let's talk about the million-dollar salaries of college coaches. Or maybe we can talk about the money the NCAA is making off of merchandise? Back when the whole Manziel-gate scandal was going on, ESPN analyst Jay Bilas expertly exposed the NCAA by typing in Johnny Manziel and other top players' names into the search bar of the NCAAs merchandise website. Jerseys and shirts with the players' respective schools and numbers popped up, proving the NCAA is making money off the players' names. Colter and the other players working to unionize have made it clear the money is not their motive. "Money is far from priority No.1 on our list of goals," Colter said. "The health of the players is No. i." Colter has a good point. The NCAA does not have any rules in place that protect an athlete when it comes to sportsrelated medical expenses. These players are going out on the field, court, track or arena not only to win a game for their team but to make money for their school. The least the NCAA and schools can do is pay for any sports-related injury As Colter said, "Student-athletes should never have to worry about if their sportsrelated medical bills are taken care of." Congratulations, NCAA. You have reached a new low in my eyes. Players are finally stepping up and trying to protect what they have as a student-athlete, and the best you can do is release a sheepish statement. Well done. g.adams@chronicle.utah.edu perfect 'ro' on floor in 2013, but Marsden just felt he needed to make a change. "It was a gut feeling," he said. "It's really corning down to who is doing the best job in practice and earning their way in." Even though gymnasts are trying to work their hardest to break into event lineups, they all put trust in the coaches and want what's best for the team. "Greg's got 999 wins, so I think we have to trust that he knows what he's doing," Del Priore said. Utah coaches typically don't set lineups until the day before a meet, giving the gymnasts every opportunity to prove themselves in practice. Like last weekend proved, even those lineups are subject to change during the meet. "You just have to be ready for it," said Mary Beth Lofgren, who cracked the vault lineup against the Bruins. "The reason we have an alternate is so that you can be thrown in at any moment, so you need to be ready." With the team being so deep and coaches already making changes, gymnasts recognize one mistake could cause them to lose their spot in the lineup, but Lofgren said all personnel moves are made with the good of the team in mind. "[Getting taken out] might be in the back of your mind, but the good thing is, with the depth of this team, is that you know whoever's going to be thrown in is gonna be ready and prepared," Lofgren said. "You trust the team that's up there." g.adams@ chronicle.utah.edu 7 Follow us on Twitter! 4, twat.r. co-nilThe,CiruPo-ny COLUMBIA PICTURES .2014 COLUMBIA 150055511,01.0018,15C301.11 WS REM ENTER FOR THE CHANCE TO WIN A PASS TO THE SPECIAL ADVANCE SCREENING OF Sign up now to • IT WAS THE GREATEST ART HEIST IN HISTORY CIODNEY DAMON MOW GOODMAN 011ADIN MIEN IISNIONInnie BEEN Ill NUM MN° "ININE EMI MAHON BONNEVILLE MEM HE1 C[00M HOT '"IliMINESI MOE MOM I9ONE CEOONfY ----BLAEIGHEil SONY Deals for food, entertainment and everything else for students, faculty and staff at theUniversity of Utah. - PG 13 SOME 151110 5 0 VAR VIOLENCEE A D NMI a SMOKING IlMonumentsMen MonumentsMenMovie.com FE Go to www.UtahCampusDeals.com and sign up today to get $10 in Deal Bucks!
