Show He Daily Utah Chronicle. Thursday. April 14, J 977 Page Seven' Think Fast by mark shenefelt The Utah Highway Patrol strikes '68 Mustang carried me elor.j a at 3 am. Monday morning. I saw the chrcrr.e in the barrow pit as I came ofi the overpass. My foot deserted the gas pedal as the head lights broke the darkness oi the early teeming freeway. The Utah Highway patrol stnkes. After escaping with five warring tickets in the past two miles per hour in years, I fcnaliy got a real live one. Sixty-nin- e a 55 rone. Sixty points to go with 130 collected from various city citations, and another costly trip to the Davis County Courthouse. With at least one year ci grandmother-styl- e driving ahead of me. I should reflect on the merits of the 55 limit and the methods of its enforcement How can I complain after geting off with a warning five times in a row? Because of countless rememberances of being the slowest car on the freeway while doing 70, both before and after the 55 law took effect? Because I was the only person on the freeway for five miles in both directions Monday morning, and endangered no one but myself going that fast? Because I didn't get to sleep until 4 a.m.? Because I'll have to watch f atcats in turquoise Lincolns shoot past me while I strictly obey the boring 55 limit lor a whole year? No. I My se.TJ-hi.Tr-ere- could complain, but I won't The law was instituted so we can have a few more years of convenience by saving gasoline. Speeders ere robbing future drivers of the privilege 90 percent cf us abuse. Just because hundreds cf people get away with 70 excursions more often than not doesn't make it right The highway patrol could do nothing but wr.te tckets and sti miss most offenders. They do all they can to catch the most flagrant violators. As I sat in the patrol car that morning, the trooper allowed several 60 plus vehicles pass until another 69 came by. He took off after that car as I left Even at that tme of night, there ere more than enough speeders to hll a trooper's ticket bock. I hope I see many tcketmgs going down in the coming months, not because I harbor a need for jealous revenge, but because those people need a jolt Much can be made of the inconveniences and drawbacks of the speed law. Anyway, it is a law and that's that Slow down Save some bucks, maybe even your life. That guy in the '77 Mark IV will get his sooner or later.
