In all, 31 skiers were trapped and seven of them, all believed to be Swiss, were missing. Killed with 28-year-old Werner, who retired from competition competi-tion in March, was Barbara Barbi Henneberger, 23, a member of the German Olympics team at Innsbruck in January. LEAVENWORTH, Kan. A tornado struck downtown Leavenworth Leaven-worth late Sunday, skipping up and down as it traversed the business district. There was considerable damage, the sheriff's office said. The twister cut a path about a quarter of a mile wide. The sheriffs office said there was an unconfirmed report of one fatality and reports of some injuries. WASHINGTON Five New York City banks and one on Long Island have been bilked out of $221,000 by a gang of international in-ternational swindlers operating in Latin America and Europe. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, confirming this Sunday, said it has launched an investigation because the gang's operations have involved tampering with the mails. Interpol, the international police organization, also has been alerted and one ringleader of the swindlers has been reported arrested ar-rested in Davos, Switzerland. Another woman member, who rifled one New York bank account of $20,000 is being trailed across Europe, postal informants inform-ants here said. |
