Show T IS always considered rather bad I IT taste for a It stay stay at home h little man manto to presume to criticise the motives which induce others to volunteer as defenders defenders dei de de- i fenders of national life and honor Such a criticiser lays himself open t to the question It If If you do not like the motives and doings of others why not J volunteer er yourself as well as other I and more serious remarks However at the ri risk k of being misunderstood and of being thus questioned we wish to present just an idea or two upon motives For the man who volunteers from a love for suffering brothers for justice and right for his country and its institutions institutions institutions we have all honor and praise If there are in the hereafter crowns of glory to be won by the great and noble of the earth by the martyrs whose lives have been given for truth we believe I CJ that some of the richest of those crowns l will be reserved for national heroes And to such we bow in admiration and reverence But the man who volunteers volunteers' in hopes of purely personal advantage we confess we cannot altogether admire These make of it a business proposition and we feel they ought to expect business business business busi busi- ness sympathy We can scarcely understand how love of country would prompt a man to ask how much you were going to give him because he had enlisted We suggest to those who have recently volunteered and who feel thus and we know there are some that for their own sakes they hide their feelings and permit us to fondly believe them patriotic and to reverence the nobility of their souls t |
