U University Chronicle Chronicle- Now that the Legislature has adjourned adjourned ad ad- and the College Bill has failed to become a law Mr Critchlow has suddenly di discovered covered that the bill was ki killed by authority of the Mormon church and that the chur church h which last fall destroyed the hopes of democracy and ushered in republican rule has since appointed a democratic committee to control the Governor and the Legisla Legisla- ture The discoveries of modern scientists scientists scientists are wonderful to contemplate but they are common place as compared with the marvelous announcements of some of Salt Lakes Lake's politicians Everybody acquainted with the doings of the late Legislature knows that the College Bill was strongly advocated by bythe bythe bythe the President of the B. B Y College and that it was as strongly opposed by the Board of Trustees of the B. B Y Academy Representatives of various sectarian schools and colleges advocated or or opposed opposed opposed op op- posed the bill according as it might be beneficial or detrimental to their own institutions Mr Critchlow being interested interested interested in in- in the founding of a church college used every effort to obtain legislation legislation legislation leg leg- that would favor his institution and others of its kind But the College College College Col Col- lege Bill was opposed from the beginning beginning beginning begin begin- ning by the friends of the public schools and was condemned by the foremost educators educators educators ed ed- of the state as unwise and dangerous dangerous dangerous dan dan- to our educational interests Itis It Itis Itis is evident that the bill was killed on a straight fair fight and on its own merits merits merits mer mer- its as it made no provision concerning the essential requisites of a college the professors and courses of instruction Even the capital required was wholly insufficient for the maintenance of one thorough college course I Its ts defeat meets with the approval of the citizens of the state Disappointed politicians may howl and newspapers may appeal to It Young t h Utah to assert their independence b but t tit it is all as a sounding bra brass s or a tinkling tinkling tink tink- ling cymbal Yes say the political papers and th the politicians dont you you listen to the church you do just as we tell you then you will be patriotic free citizens ns The implication is that if you would be a free citizen you must be bea a slave to some political boss and dance every time he cracks the whip Young Utah are not being dictated by the church neither will they submit to the lash of political demagogues and newspaper men It is the purpose of the young men of this state to act as their best judgment dicta dictates dictates dic dic- ta tates es to emulate the worthy example of Governor Wells whom they are proud to number as one of them We vVe advise the local press not to waste printers' printers ink and sheets of valuable paper in trying to arouse in Young lJ Utah tah that spirit of independent political slavery which is isso isso isso so admired by free men Balaam |
