M C. C A. A debate There was standing room only when Mr Leaver of the Delta Phi called the meeting to order White Roylance and Reynolds defended the affirmative and Young Griffiths and Bjorklund the negative of the question Resolved that there should be an educational qualification for voters in the United States Mr Leaver introduced introduced introduced in in- J. J P. P White who advanced to to the front amid applause Mr White showed how the prosperity of a nation depends upon its education and claimed r that a person who has no interest in the government should not be allowed to vote He spoke of the influence which tongued smooth-tongued politicians have upon the uneducated people and the necessity of obtaining accomplishments so far as to act independently for ones one's self as his best judgment shall direct Mr White spoke of the stimulus which education would receive if an educational qualification for voters were adopted As education was within the reach of all disfranchise the thema theman theman man ma 1 who wont won't get it Mr Young for forthe forthe forthe the negative followed Mr White and said that an ignorant person knows when he is ill or well governed and quoted the Declaration of Independence and the preamble preamble preamble pre pre- amble of the Constitution in support of his views He made a good hit when he quoted the resolutions passed bp a prohibition prohibition prohibition convention Mr Young made a good effort and was warmly applauded Mr Roylance of the Delta Phi then followed followed followed fol fol- lowed and read definitions of education given by several persons He spoke of the morality among the citizens of this Republic and said that statistics show that one-fifth one of the voters can be bought for per head Mr Griffiths thought his opponents when they argued for an educational qualification argued for a coll colI college college col col- I l lege education and under this delusion his whole speech favored the Delta Phi In reply to the statistics quoted he said that i f tenths nine-tenths of the voters who are bought are educated When Mr VIr Leaver introduced introduced intros intro intro- I s Mr Reynolds he was greeted with o applause Mr vIr Reynolds without doubt made mad the speech of the evening His eloquent effort received an ovation and he was cheered again and again as he pro pro- Mr Bjorklund kept the audience audience audience audi audi- ence in laughter by his humorous sayings The thermometer was well applied as is s was also the horse and buggy and house lot White and Young made the summaries summaries sum summaries sum sum- maries for their respective sides Mr Leaver kindly asked the judges to retire to the dark halls and g go into consultation In the meantime the audience was held spellbound by the superb playing of Miss Geneve Ellerbeck Her Bel piano solo was the feature of the evening Misses Mae Price and Ida Bates rendered a pleasing duet When the decision of the judges was handed to Mr Leaver he leaned back in his chair with a look of satisfaction and arising announced that the affirmative affirmative affirm tive had won Pandemonium then reigned and the audience dispersed iJ |
