Show more Prof Kerrs Kerr's zeal and ONCE activity is displayed in his hie efforts to continue the Mathematical Society and place it on a broad and deep Jeep foundation There are no professors here who take more interest in their I classes than does Prof Kerr and the Professor makes a mistake if he thinks f that the students fail fai to appreciate this f interest or that he is working to little purpose But it is our honest opinion that the time is not ripe enough for such a society and that it is going to tobe tobe tobe be a flat at failure The poor success attained attained attained at at- by the society last year ought to ser serve e as a cautionary signal Taking the programs all in all they amounted to but little and it is doubtful if it they can be improved upon this year Had Hadit it not been for the music the audiences would not have numbered more than a dozen persons and the lecturers this year will have to rely on good musical programs or they will be talking to empty houses but if music is to be bethe bethe bethe the main prop is not the society open to criticism It is all right to organize a mathematical society at some great university where students from all parts I of the country are assembled for the e express express ex ex- press purpose of studying mathematics in order to gain a living by teaching it after the completion of the college course but here things are different so we did not read that sign on the bulletin-board bulletin with much complacency |
