Show Take one from column A, one from column B... Well, it's spring and the hormones are just It's probably easier to discern this physiological pheno observing the anti-war movement than by anything else, for spring a season for rebellion as much as any other pastime. Spring is also the season for national crises, e.Te Cambodia, Kent State, the assassination of Mart ,n Luther K, g, assassination of Robert Kennedy so on Perhaps the phenomena, rebellion and crises, are related, who knows? At any rate, here we are this spring with another national crisi s at hand complete with accompanying rebellion. That of c u se, i he momentary imperiiment of Vietnamization and the escala on of the Vietnamese war. This signals a new era ,n cntic m o the war t.y Democratic Presidential candidates, as we heard all those guys say -t was a "reckless act" increasing international tensions, prompt ng resolutions in Congress, etc. For the first t,me they V Jave something solid to hang on to and complain about. We must indeed thank the President for that. . Not to be left out, all the anti-war groups are getting their gear on and calling for protests and strikes and such. Locally, the new le t ha turned from city politics and started organizing again (probably witn future political ambitions in mind) and has called for a general strike in protest next week and other "disruptive, though not necessarily illegal" activities. Rather unoriginal thinking, we're afraid. Even if it were original thinking, however, it still would serve little good The underground anti-war movement has had their power usurped, mostly by an above-ground anti-war movement named George McCovern. McCovern is the first really serious total-peace candidate this country has seen. He is honest, refreshingly apolitical, seems to be uncompromising, and best of all, has a lot of support and is getting more. Besides having the popular support, he is rounding up all-important financial support fast; a recent fund-raising concert featuring Carole King, ames Taylor and Barbra Streisand netted him a cool $300,000. Along with winning the Wisconsin primary and gaining much labor support in Pennsylvania, McGovern has some momentum going which is not going to stop easily. . So that's where the anti-war movement stands in this election year; divided between system and non-system means. We want to encourage en-courage one and all to protest the war by whatever means they see fit and legal, including strikes. But one thing seems blatantly obvious: nobody is going to elect a strike as President. |
