Show I Student poll influences priorities A re-distribution of priorities based on a questionnaire completed by students was the cause of the re-structuring of the student health service and the new combined psychological service program according to Vice President of Student r Affairs Virginia Frobes. The explanation was given by Dr. Frobes in a noon meeting Wednesday in the Union, called by her to clear up "misconceptions" in the administration's position on those student services. Dr. Frobes explained to a small group of students and administrators present at the meeting that the cut in health and psychiatric services was such that the University will be using it's "money to meet a different set of needs and priorities." As a whole, Dr. Frobes went on to say, the three main priorities of the University which the students indicated they wanted in the questionnaire were a stronger undergraduate program, increased academic counseling and career planning facilities, and a stronger graduate program. "There is no question about completely giving up services," said Dr. Frobes, but rather a give and take of priorities. In a handout which was given to all attending the session, the administration plan for student services was outlined. This plan included a section which stated that "the role of Student Health Service will be evaluated to determine the University Hospital and available community resources suggest more appropriate sources of health care for the studentbody..." Such resources, the handout said, might include "an expanded insurance program. ..and expanded fees for service." The circular further stated that "with the exception of students receiving financial aid, we will move to charging fees on the basis of students' ability to pay..." "We need to teach students to pay for health services," added Dr. Frobes, "after all, that is a fact of life." Dr. George Edison, present Director of the Student Health Service, pointed out that the "problem is cost in a private office is a great deal higher" than the cost of the present Health Service," and the cost of the University Hospital is even higher than that." "Students may need training in paying," admitted Dr. Edison, "but they do not need training in getting screwed." DR. VIRGINIA FROBES... ...wants priority give and take |
