Even so Tomlin was the leading scorer of the game with 31 points. "Mike Leatherby did very well on the boards having a total of 19 rebounds," said Coetz. About Dean Porter he says, "He did good on controlling the boards as well as scoring." Leatherby made a total of 17 points, while Porter scored 24 to aid the Ute cause. By NANCY ROBLEZ '' Chronicle Staff flaying before a meager but enthusiastic crowd Friday night, : he University freshman basketball team bettered a 1-4 ecord by defeating the College of "iouthern Utah State by a score of 7-77. Saturday night game against Rangely of Colorado added another win for the young Ute team. Final score against Rangely stood at 81-64 bringing their record to three wins and four losses. An early lead against Southern Utah State continued throughout the first period of play. Only once during this period did Southern Utah State come close to closing the gap. Their attempts were futile. The Utes had a six-point lead at the half and continued to lead by as much as twenty with only seconds left to go in the game. Against Southern Utah State it was improved team work and accurate passing which kept the Utes ahead. The use of a zone defense instead of their regular man-to-man helped. Head Coach Lou Coetz stated, "Tonight we used a zone defense which worked out better because we are a zone team. We have been using man-to-man." About his players Coach Coetz "Alan Nakagama did defensively good all night," continues Coetz. Against Rangely the Utes were able to come from behind by 5 points to the lead at halftime. From then on the game belonged to the Utes' .frosh. The same team effort which was evident against Southern Utah State prevailed in the game against Rangely. The game was not a suspenseful one but it proved interesting to see Bernard Tomlin stack up 25 points and Rangely Spartan Earnest Lee 24 points. Alan Nakagama totaled 19 points for the Papooses. Dean Porter was the leading rebounder of the night with a total of 18. The final words from Lou Coetz about the game against Rangely were, "I thought they played very well." |
