Sillars, visiting professor of speech from San Fernando Valley Slate College, Col-lege, speaks on "Universities and Minority Students-A Problem in Communication." 'Communication poses problem for campus' The one discipline geared for relevancy is speech, Dr. Malcolm 0. Sillars insisted. Guest lecturer Wednesday in the Marriott Library Auditorium, Dr. Sillars' topic was "Universities and Minority Students-A Problem in Communication." In his lecture Dr. Sillars maintained that the conditions for student unrest still exist and that the immediate problem facing campuses today is communication with blacks and cliicanos. lie outlined six primary items necessary for effective communication: We must learn meanings aie in people, not in words; a man has a right to be called what he wants to be called; discussions must center on a positive basis, not on negative limitations; all communication is reasonable, whether emotional or logical; communication must emphasize substance and not procedure, and people must learn to live with outrageous language and actions. He is a visiting professor ol speech from San Fernando Valley Stale College. Dr. Sillars was acting president of San Fernando shortly alter a 1') racial occurrence at a freshman football game expanded into the firebombing of the President's office, capture of the college president as a hostage and arrest of 285 students for failure to disperse from a peaceful sit-in. |
