Did you u sed o wear a Yankee cap and jacket like t he pros do at those Gulls contests? Did yiu attend Sunday af 1 TIS.I, A LM ,. - U1 MMgjllg 4 . ternoon contests? The answers to each question are: Yes, Yes , Yes, Yea!" I went to the University ofUtah and was graduated in 1975. 1 checked out Salt Lake Gulls games often every summer because the weather was usually too bad in the winter to journey to Salt Lake City to watch the Utah Jazz or the University ofUtah Utes. The only way I was able to see Ute games was if the Uintah Ute wrestling team was having a bad year. One year, while working for a Vernal newspaper, I finished early because Uintah didnt have anyone in the championship finals and I attended a U of U game. If I had been covering the Utes this year and Salt Lake City wasnt hosting the Winter Olympics, I would have spent the whole week in the Utah gym due to Uintah placingninth, which has to be one ofthe worst finishes ofall times at a state mat meet by the mat Utes. Back in the 1970s, the Salt Lake minor league team went from being the Padres (coached by Don Zimmer) to the Angels to the Mariners as far as their mqjor league connections were concerned, and so I wore my faithful Yankee gear. Because of a lack of fans, which is why the Pacific Coast League team left until returning as the Buzz (now the Stingers) in the early 1990's, I guess I stood out during those hot, Sunday afternoon games as a Roosevelt Yankee in King Arthurs Court the ancient Derks Field.
