N The Uintah Arts Council announces the next installment of their annual Concert Series: Los Hermanos de los Andes. In 1989, a group of engineering b tudents, discovering that they sliared more than the common interest of playing with numbers, started meeting together informally to play and share Andean music and culture. After receiving frequent requests to play at talent shows, group activities and other public appearances, it was decided to organize a formal group and call themselves Los Hermanos de los walks of life. Members of Los Hermanos de los Andes have traveled, electrifying crowds with their music, throughout the U.S., Mexico, Central America, Europe and Asia. Amongst their many performances Los Hermanns de los Andes have also made many guest appearances throughout the western United States and Hawaii. Consulting and recording has been done for school division, BrighamYoungUniversity, and TBS. Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star or Baa Baa Black Sheep is one such motive. Literal u re too has basic story lines or motives that underlie its most complexexpressions. I wish to Bpeakabout a closely interrelate pair of these motives: the transitoriness of fame and fortune (sic transit gloria) and a power that presides and controls no matter how strenuous and clever human beings are in striving to have their own way, no matter how noble and good that way may seem at times. The first of these motives is illustrated by a little poem of Percy Bysshe The title character, Ozyinandias, appears to have been a mighty ruler of empires at one time. Yet the only record Shelley finds of him is the remnants of a huge statue. Fragments of the physiognomy suggest pride, power, and cruelty. Around the fragments are nothing but desert sands. The tyrants cruel boast, still readable on the broken pedestal is wonderfully ironic. Here Lies Ozyinandias, King of KingB. Look on his works ye mighty and despair. The second motive is found in Oedipus Rex: not the Oedipus Complex which Freud discerned in the play ami made so famous but Oedipuss perfectly understandable desire to avoid a fate decreed for him by the gods. This avoidance had been the desire of his parents also, who had sought to send him as an infant to his destruction. Yet despite their efforts and his, despite the nobility of sentiment within both, he lived to kill his father, marry his mother, and become the father of brothers and sisters-a- ll inadvertently. Somerset Maugliam has a story with this theme too called Appointment at Samara (featured as an epitaph at the beginningof John OHaras novel by that name. A French short story, The Legend ofSt. Julian, Hospitaller is built around this motive. It is essentially the story of Jonah. Both motives serve as cautionary talcs, in some respects the same cautionary tale. Don't become too cocky about your personal achievements and success, don't flaunt them unduly. Ultimately you will be bereft of you embellishments, and you may be tripped up any time. A famous Renaissance figure (perhaps it harks hock to Medieval times) is the wheel of fortune with the same message: standinggiddilyatthetopofthe wheel, don't be too smug. Likewise, if you find yourself at the bottom do not despair. There ought to be a warning label, This wheel turns unexpectedly. No position on it is guaranteed. I have been thinking about these motives as I have struggled to come back, not so much from the enormity of the a spirally fractured femur-th- e leg is healing nicely, therapeutic exercise appears to be going well. But my other bodily functions have been slow to overcome the trauma they experienced, my energy is quickly depleted, and my mind is functioning sluggishly.
