WW II Secret Tragedy Local connection noted to History Channel documentary The History Channel is scheduled to air a one-hodocumentary entitled "The Rohna Disaster. World War IPs Secret Tragedy on Jan. 6. The program is based on the book of the same name written by Him Bennett, whose brother Robert was a casualty ofthe British troopship, HMS Rohna. The battleship sank during WWII on Nov. 26, 1943, ofT the coaHt ofNorth Africa. The documentary focuses on the experiences of the families and next of kin hack home in America during World War II. Tech Sgt. Erwin Wameke. ofPeirce, Nebraska, wasa passenger oil the ship. Wameke is the double-cousi- n hi Esther Roberts, of Roosevelt. On Nov. 26, 1943, the British transport Rohna was in the Mediterranean headed for India carrying almost 2,000 soldiers. The ship was struck in the engine room by t. secret missile, Hs 293, dropped by a German Heinkel 117 bomber. The Rohna lost all power, caught fire and began to list. Hundreds died instantly, and in the end 1,015 GIs had died, the greatest loss at see of U.S. personnel in WWII. Wameke was rescued alter floating in the Mediterranean Sea for a couple of hours. Eventually, after regrouping, Wameke and other survivors continued on to China where he .became a part of the 23rd Group of the 74lk Fighter Squadron known as The Flying Tigers. He was an airplane mechanic serving as a flight chief until the end of WWII. After the war, Wameke farmed east of Pierce until hie death following surgery in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Omaha. After reading Professor Carlton Jackson s book, Forgotten Tragedy, it was learned that the tail gunner on the German Heinkel aircraft that released the guided bomb that sank the Rohna was a soldier by the name of August Wameke. The documentary opens with GIs boarding a troopship like the Rohna, and contains scenes of an air battle, and footage about the Heinkel 117 aircraft and the Hs 293 tactical radio guided missile that delivered the fatal blow to the Rohna. Conditions aboard the ship, and the recognition of the heroic rescues by the crew of the USS Pioneer, are portrayed. Secrecy in wartime and so longafter the war is addressed. Tentative time for the Jan. 6 show on the History Channel isBp.m. Viewers should check the weekly TV guide for the correct time. Clarke confirmed by Senate as new BLM head The UJS.
