The Utah Department of Health and the load health department ask you to remember that your vacation playgrounds are "noma" to a wide variety of wild animals. Your exposure to dangerous diseases like hantavirus, plague and rabies can be minimized with some commoij sense practices. "The animals are smart enough to stay away from us," says Craig Nichols, state epidemiologist "If we could just get the same cooperation from humans, we would all be safer." On May 22, the first animal rabies case of 1995 was confirmed by the State Health Laboratory. The infected bat was caught, but not before biting a Salt Lake County man. He began rabies vaccinations the same day. "Bats, skunks, raccoons, coyotes and foxes can all carry runes. Even household pets can get rabies through contact with an infected animal," says Nichols. He advises that your pets have current rabies immunizations. Rabid animals are ' not always aggressive, and contact with all wild animals should always be avoided. Dead animals should never be handled without appropriate protection. A case of plague involving the lungs occurred last year when a pet cat became infected and transmitted the disease to its owner. Its likely the cat picked up the disease from a rodent "Plague is endemic in Utah," says Nichols. "We have large populations of a variety of rodents. Most rodents carry fleas. Plague is transmitted by flea bites." To avoid plague and the recently identified sin nombre hantavirus, Nichols recommends staying away from rodents and their burrows. Unlike plague but similar to rabies, hantavirus is transmitted by urine, droppings and saliva from infected animals. "Our best advice is to stay ' away from wild animals, says Nichols. "Of course, thats difficult when rodents can get into your hole." cabin through a quarter-incHe recommends sealing or covering all such holes, keeping food (especially pet food) and garbage away. from the reach of wild animals.
