CSU won the first 30-1two games, 34-3but Utah 30-2- 7 won 30-2to force a fifth and final game, which they won 15-- 8 at Brigham Young Universitys Smith Fieldhouse. Morrill had 35 assists and 3 digs vs. CSU. Utah Coach Beth Launiere said, This is such a sense of accomplishment. Im really proud of this team. We said we wanted to win a championship at the beginning of the year, and we did. The key to the win by Utah was the third game, which was close until Utah pulled away in the late stages. Once Utah won the third game they knew the championship was theirs even though the fourth game was closer with Utah taking advantage of several CSU errors. The Utes were never threatened in the deciding game. After losing ine first two games, Utah speeded up its offense and dominated the blocking game. Utah out blocked CSU, 23.5 to 16. Utah advanced to the championship by beating Brigham Young University for the second time this sea30-232-3- 0, 25-3Utahs son, 30-2setters, Jackie Morrill and Kelsie Kartschner had 39 and 22 assists, respectively. Sylva Strzinkova led Utah with 16 kills and four other Utes, Kim Turner, Katrena Ellett, Alisa Geddes, Adrianne Bradley-Drak- e finished in double figures in kills as well. BYU's Coach Elaine Michaelis believed that the match turned in Utahs favor when the Utes managed to steal game three from the Cougars, who led by a point or two most of the game. BYU had a game point, but a BASKETBALL BATTLE-Brand- on huge Utah block tied the game and player in Price last week. eventually led to a Utah win. i 2, Jr 9, 3, j ) V 7, OUT OF MY WAY-Co- le Hancock, Union, tries to avoid a hand in the face while dribbling down the court in the Cougars season opening victory over the Dinos in Price, Tuesday. Todd pulls the ball away from a Dino Cats open season by whipping Dinos By Aldon Rachele Union Highs boys hoop team opened the season on a winning note with Cougars invading Price for 72-6- 1 over Carton, Friday, Nov. 30. Bobbie Brotheraon was the top Bcoref for the Cats at 18 points, which included a 10 for 12 free throw show. Matt Jewkes led Carbon with 23. Union will host Grantsville, Friday, Nov. 30. The Cats buried the Dinos with 24 points in the first quarter for a 24-1-6 edge. Both teams scored 14 points in the second and Union led 38-3- 0. Carbon pumped in 20 and Union scored 18, but was still ahead 56-5- 0 after three. Union pumped in 23 and held Carbon to 19 in a hot shooting fourth quarter and won by 11 points. I checked out Duchesne Highs wreatlinglunch room and saw only nine matmen with Coaches Dave & Brandon Moat and Roland I via taking turns doing tussling duty. Coach Dave Moat was hoping that one more boy, who took part in the school plqy, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers would join the team after the drama is dime. Maybe, some of those other six brothers might want to compete in the mat sport? Most teams field 14 varsity wrestlers from 103 to 275 pounds, and then 14 more JV tusslers. However, Duchesne will have a rough time fielding a varsity team. Some of the athletes will have to do double duty. They might see JV action before and after the varsity contest. Duchesne isnt the only school havingproblema getting guys to come out for mat teams. Uintah, Delta, and Wasatch, long-tim- e wrestling powers, have been experiencing low turnout of matmen. The sport of wrestling has pretty much been killed off by colleges and universities in the local area. Years ago the University ofUtah, Utah State University, Weber State University, Nevada-La- s Vegas, College of Eastern Utah, Dixie and Snow Jr. Colleges had wrestling teams, but they have all vanished. Just recently Brigham YoungUniversity and Ricks known as College-no- w their mat programs. College wrestling has disappeared completely from the State of Utah with nearby Boise State University fielding the only mat team. Who knows how long wrestling will be a sport at Boise? Some local BYU tusslers of the past are Morgan Woodhouse and Tom Meacham. Some might blame equal rights for sports where colleges need same numbers of women and mens teams. Basketball, soccer, volleyball, track have men and women teams, but sport. Are wrestling is an Unions Chris Truman and Cole Hancock scored 17 points each with Truman picking up 12 rebounds and Hancock gaining three steals. Brandon Todd, Union, was a terror on the boards with 16 rebounds. We led the whole game. We came out strong to begin the game, and had a little let down when we started reaching and fouling, said Union Coach Mike Roes. Carbon made some runs, but we stopped them. Im pleased with the effort and happy with the first game. Our athletes worked hard. We had three guys in double figures. Carbon has a good team. Both teams were pretty even. Unions opponent, Grantsville moved from the 2-- class to the this year. Last year Union defeated the Cowboy in Grantsville. 3-- A A female wrestlers on the high school and college level something for the near fiiture? I just dont see lady tussling happening because the local mat failhfiil wont go for it because it would mess up their traditional wrestling views. I do recall a couple of girls, who went out for wrestling at Uintah and Union High. One girl just wanted to wrestle girls at Union and there weren't too many available, and the other one at Uintah didnt eijoy the rough contact with the boys. She quit. I don't think she was too welcomed by the male matmen in the first place. Getting back to the sport, which is a tough one with matmen constantly losing weight to compete. Basketball go on a diet if they look like former pro football phyer, William Refrigerator Perry. When Dave Haslem was running for the Uintah County Commission his son, Jerry Haslem, delivered information to the Uintah Basin Standard for a story about his father. He forgot all about the campaign, and said, You took pictures of me when I played youth baseball and wrestled for Uintah High School. I recall that Haslem was pretty much a JV tusslcr, who had the tough luck of being in the same weight class as three-tim- e state champion, Pat Jenkins. Haslem could have quit, but lie did his best to help his team even though he didn't get any state glory. Cory Bostian won a state champi' onship a few years ago for Union. When I first saw him I wasn't sure he would reach the first place goal. However, he dedicated himself by totally focusing on the sport and became a champion. Daniel M us toe followed the JV route and then reached a starting spot on the vanity team at Lhiion. Lust year tlie 160 pounder was one of the top wrcstlen on the Cougar squad, and proved hard work could allow him to place second at the region meet plus compete at the state tournament. Lastly, the numbers are down in the sport of wrestling throughout Utah, but not the desire and dedication that keeps the sport's faithful on their journey tobcingtheBest They Can Be". athletes only have to all-ma- le COPY v - r. r7 - "A, jj A --- X.. . i ourGMC Trucks, Vans and SUVs. - i The PowerjolSierraH mw,&-Th9:Aattity.- o Yukon ! .I i ; ...The comfort and luxury of Envoy. on most models!
