After charging up his battery while touring the sights of Duchesne City he returned to find out that the Lady Eagles had juiced up their batteries on their way to an 8 tie and then had enough power left to rally for a 45-3- 9 triumph over Juan Diego Catholic School in their season opener by hitting several key shots. Chelsea Stansfield gave Duchesne its first point of the game by converting one out of two free throws for a 0 Eagle lead, and then DHS's offense went into a deep sleep just like that old Snow White gal. Amy Hansen of Juan Diego scored the first fora2-- l lead and then Natalye Blackwell tossed in two free throws for a 4--1 lead that had Duchesnes fans wondering if their team would ever score a bucket. LaCol Grant answered the Eagle fans prayers by sinking two field goals, and Lindsay Mullins flipped in two free throws plus Jessica Fabrizio charity toss knotted up the game at eight points after one quarter of play. Grant and Mullins are freshmen and Fabrizio is a sophomore. Jenny Allen and Erica Skewes are the only seniors on the DHS team. Duchesne went to the free throw line once again with Mullins cashing in for two free throws and Stansfield hitting a charity toss as well for an 11-- 8 Eagle lead early in the second quarter. The Eagles continued their free throw magic by having L. Grant and Fabrizio hit free throws, but then changed their routine by going on a two-poistreak with Fabrizio zapping a field goal and L. Grant pumpEagle ing in two more for a 19-1-4 edge. L. Grantstole the ball and scored on a layup on her second dash to the hoop. It was back to the free throw plan for Duchesne with foul pitches by Tai Marett, also only a sophomore, hitting two tosses and Allen pumping in one for the Eagles largest lead of the Fabrizio game at eight points, 22-14-- By Aldnn Rachele team members were announced during the past few weeks and volleybull athletes from Duchesne County schools netted uwurds with Chelsey Glines, a junior, from Union High named to the second team by both the Salt Lake Tribunff and Deseret News. Duchesne appeared to be cruising to victory with Fabrizio zeroing in on the net for two buckets and Stansfields field goal on a layup putting the Eagles up by eight once again at late in the third quarter, but Juan Diego CatholicSchool pulled off a miraculous third quarter finish by going on an 11-- run to take a 0 lead. Andrea Kelley, a ninth grader, hit a loiigthree-pointe- r and two steals 30-2- 2 0 33-3- Marett Eagles up by six at 42-3finished her hot quarter with another field goal and a free throw to give Duchesne a 45-3- 9 win over Juan Diego. Down the stretch Ducheene hit seven charity tosses out of 11 attempts. The Lady Eaglet had three girls score in double figures with L. Grant at 11 and Fabrizio, Marett at 10. Grant hit four field goals and was 3 for 4 from the foul line. Marett tossed in threefield goals and was 4 for 10 from the charity stripe. Fabrizio pumped in four field goals and was 2 for 7 at the foul line. Also scoring for Duchesne were: Mullins, 6; Stansfield, 5; Allen, 3. Duchesne fired in 13 field goals and hit 19 out of 36 fl ee throws. Stansfield is a junior. Fabrizio and L. Grant scored five counters in the second quarter. Grant also led the team with four points in the first quarter and Fabrizio had four n the third. Blackwell led Juan Diego with 13 counters and Kelly added seven. Hansen added four, and Whitney Druce scored three. Juan Diego fired in 16 field goals. 6. in a row by Blackwell plus two field goals gave the Lady Eagle defense a black eye in the closing seconds. Blackwell hit the well once again for one free throw that gave Juan Diego a 34-3- 0 lead, but they fouled up a chance to go up by six when Hansen missed both of her charity tosses early in the fourth quarter. Mullins hit a field goal and Marett pumped in a free throw to bring Duchesne within one at 34-3However, Blackwell hit two foul pitches that gave Juan Diego a 36-3- 3 advantage. Duchesne wasnt ready to quit as Marett soared to the net for a field goal and Allen displayed senior leadership by hitting two free throws that put Duchesne up by one at 37-3- 6 with Duchesnes boys and girls 3:43 left.
