Diffiexcellent intonation and use of dy- Musicians sweep highest ratings in competition students from the Twenty-fou-r Uintah School of Music and Arts received Superior ratings in the Utah Federation of Music Clubs Festivals held in Salt Lake City on Saturday, March 24 at the University of Utah. The USOMATA students were from the studies of Ora Fay Oviatt, Merietta Lainhart, and Elisa Vredeveld. They ranged in ages from 6 to 18 and in performance levels from Primary to Difficult The students were from Vernal, Range ly, Roosevelt (Neola), and Altamont. Each competitor played two memorised selections, one from a required list and one selection of their choice. They were judged on their presentation, accuracy, technique and musicianship. Festival entrant did not compete against each other.Each was rated on hisher own merits as a student, not as a professional performer. Presented by the Basin Aj Council, Burgees, aguitar-is-t from New York City performed several Latin songs for community members who attended the event A crowd of about 60 attended the boncert, "The Music ofBrazil, at the Union High auditorium. Burgess played songs dating back to tha late 1800s and early 1900s. Tha group listened to pieces written by five different composers. Burgess moved his audience with 17 songs including Brqeiro, (Portuguese for "sassy,") Ainda Me Recordo, ("I Still Remember), Vais em La, a Stagelight auditions 17-1- 1 cellent, vety good or good, evaluated each entrant. This rating was based on their performance and abilities listed above. Judges were selected from among the teachers who are members of the American Federation of Music Clubs. On March 10, Dave Burfitt received a Superior rating in the cello division held at Carden Memorial School in Salt Lake City. Later, on March 24, 23 violin and viola students received superior ratings at the division at the U of U. The following students received superior ratings: Primary , Rachelle Richardson, and Merietta Lainhart were room supervisors the afternoon session. At tha end of his performance Burgess returned to the stage for an encore. Burgess began his music career in a rock band. However over the last few years he has traveled to Brazil where he studied the country's music. Roosevelt was the first Btop on his western tour. While in Brazil, Burgees met a man who had spent his life collecting guitar music. Burgess was given free reign of a collection containing well over 700 guitar pieces which he Incorporated into his performance.
