Since the alcoholic usually denies his illness and refuses direct treatment, the Cottage Program works by focusing on the people around the alcoholic, Mrs. Miller explained. These people (family members, emfriends, etc.) not ployer, only suffer from the alcoholic's activities, but are often unknowingly su porting his dependency on alcohol, she said. In the Cottage Meetings these individuals are taught how to modify their behavior toward the alcoholic to bring about positive change to his behavior. They are also shown how to recognize and deal with their own problems so that they, too, may lead more satisfying lives. The Cottage Program has been successful because of the extensive use of volunteers from within the communities, Mrs. Miller said. New training sessions for volunteers will be opening soon.
