Show UINTAH BASIN RECORD continues through October 13. It will be as usual widely observed nationally and in Utah. One of the most important observances in Utah- will be direct fire prevention action by members of paid and volunteer fire departments. Many of these departments will take the fire safety message to homes and business establishments hrough personal visits. This personal visitation program is not confined in all cases to, Fire Prevention Week. Some departments carry out the program over a period of several weeks at this time of the year, when fire precaution is so important because of the approaching winter season with its increased hazards. Some departments carry out the program all year long. . Use of radio communication between the fire alarm office and fire trucks has simplified the home and business inspection d truck can be taken out into the program. The neighborhood, or business with all members of the crew except the driver making home visits, and fire inspections where occupants desire. With the truck in constant radio communication with headquarters it is never out of service while this fire prevention work is being carried on. If there is an alarm the driver sounds the truck siren, the crew quickly reponds and the truck is on its way. But the truck will be on its way to a fire less often because of the inspection program. In city after city where this program has been carried on fires and losses have been sharply reduced. Fire Prevention Week is a good time for encouraging home and businessfire safety inspection. Paid and volunteer fire departments can and should take the lead in this work, but citizens must do their part by welcoming fire safety counsel and maintaining fire safe premises throughout the year. Does parental responsibility end when our children enter the doors of our schools, or when they otherwise participate in school activity? It is true that we place our trust and confidence in those who teach and supervise them; we expect these trained persons not only to teach them, but also to instil in them discipline, respect for authority and school them in the principles of conduct that we expect them to display in all other places. But, shouLd we not be with our youngsters, in spirit and in body when they are called upon to provide or to participate in social and athletic functions during and outside schools? Is there any standard by which we may say it's the teachers job to supervise and to instruct in every matter of healthful student life? If the student disregards the authority we place in his teacher, or if his group makes a decision contrary to the best interests of many of his fellow students, then it certainly is time for both the teacher and the parent to meet completely their twin responsibiliies. 'The actions of a boy or girl on their way to or from a school function are, of cource, beyond immediate control. Those things are truly moral matters. But if the parents, as parents and as supporters of our public schools, exercise their responsibilities and their rights at ALL times, and temper it with wise and loving counsel to their children in all matters, then another great step has been taken toward a richer harvest from the field of education. THIS IS FIRE PREVENTION WEEK IN UTAH While the prevention of fire must be a year-aroutask, it is well that one week each year is particularly designated as Fire Prevention Week. It focuses public attention on the need for fire safety effort. It gives a special opportunity to editorial writers, publicists, commentators, safety organizations and fire departments to drive home the message that life and propery can be saved through intelligent fire prevention effort.
